Welcome to BYC!

Hello, J, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
I hope the necropsy shows something that will not impact your remaining 3 girls.
Are you building a secure run to keep them in? The neighbors dog is likely to come for a second go if it was able to try once.

Thanks! Me, too. The State vet seems pretty nice, even though she's busy as hell. She knew I didn't want to just write the bird off before her time and was willing to wait for me to bring her in, rather than Arkansas is still a realatively small state, so you'd be surprised at how accessible our officials are.

And yes, I am building a secure covered run in my back yard. It has taken precedence over my fence and shop project because the girls just kinda showed up. I got rabbits on the way, too, so I gotta get a move on.

Eh, I don't think so. He was dumb enough to leave both of his dogs loose with no one to care for them while he went somewhere for a week-and-a-half or so. There've been multiple complaints from multiple neighbors over sever months about the dogs destroying property and running loose in the neighborhood. Lately, they went after an old man down the street who had just taken his grandson inside. This is not exactly the kind of place where people call the cops or the city services regularly, either. I haven't seen or heard the dogs in a while, neither at his house nor on the streets.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Heynow. I'm J. and just adopted four mature chickens from my girlfriend a couple weeks ago when she discovered that she lives in a subdivision with covenences prohibiting the keeping of poultry, and that her neighbors are jerks.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

I have three chickens because one died yesterday afternoon/evening of some sort of affliction, which will be determined by necropsy at the State Veterinary Lab come Monday.

(3) What breeds do you have?
The survivors are a Wyandotte named Speckles, who is quite unfriendly and somewhat neurotic due to an unfortunate chickhood incident with a possum (for which she has not received therapy), an Americuna named Matilda ("Maddie") who doesn't like fences and who follows me around like a dog but will not play fetch, and another Americuna named Buckbeak who is moody but usually friendly when I show up with food.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

Certainly not the smell or worrying about them when they get sick or scared. My Daddy instinct went into killer overdrive when a jerk neighbor's pitbulls came into my yard and tried to eat Maddie. There I was feeling guilty about thinking of clipping her wings. good thing I didn't do it because those wings saved her life.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

Eh, not much time for real hobbies. I have kids, go to school (chemistry major, math minor), have a girlfriend, and work.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share:

2 kids, 1 dog, 1 cat; student and aircraft maintenance technician; sometimes I build things or fix things for money.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?

I found this place when a friend of mine sent me a link containing information on Amprolium dosing for coccidiosis.:D

Hello fellow Newbie! Welcome. Just wanted to say that I love your descriptions of your chicks... Sounds like they have great personalities! Sorry you lost one already... Best wishes!! :)
