Hi- I am very new to chickens, but love the two in my care so much! I am hoping someone with more chicken experience can help me figure out if one of my chickens is fine (and I am just ignorant) or if she has a problem.
Her name is Touhi. I am unsure of how old she is, but I was told she was under a year when I got her at the end of October to be a companion to my other chicken, Hade, who is 22 weeks old. (She was brought home to be a companion to a sickly chick at the barn I go to. The sickly chick turned out to be a roo and is now living on an egg farm but I wanted to keep the little gal.)
The person at the store said she was a 'mixed breed' but she was the closest girl in size and appearance to Hade, who is also some kind of chicken mutt (she has a muff and beard). She was in a cage by herself and her nails were overgrown. I trimmed them and they are getting better... I am pretty sensitive, but I felt like the chickens in the store were not taken very good care of.
In the past couple of days, I noticed that she has a "bump" on her chest/neck that Hade does not and became worried that maybe it was a sign of an impacted crop. Also, she doesn't poop at night in the coop (only Hade does, who is top hen and bosses Touhi around) but does make HUGE poops in the morning when let out in the run. Finally her comb and wattles are not as red as Hade's, but I don't know if this is due to her age or illness or nutritional issues.
When I feel the "bump" area, it is higher than where her crop should be (I think?) because it is above her breastbone and is centered and not to the right. When I feel it, it just feels like her neck/spine bones, but as though there is a curve in there. There is no roundness to it and I can put my thumb and index finger on either side of it. It just feels like bones under skin and feathers.
She is active, in fact she flew out of my yard today after she knocked something over and got scared, eats and seems perky and fine. Sometimes the "bump" is barely noticable, and I can't tell if it is because I am looking for it, that it looks pronounced at other times. I'm attaching some pictures. The first three you can see the "bump" and the last two you can't. (They don't normally stay on concrete, we had a lot of rain and I had just swept their shavings to the side.)
Please forgive my ignorance, I hope that this is just her body type and not something wrong. I have spent hours looking at pictures and reading descriptions of chickens with impacted or sour crops, cankers, Mareks's and wry neck, but they all don't quite seem like Touhi.
