Hello All -

One of my Americuana’s has a bit of a runny vent and recently has an orangish poo (picture below). I read that it is most likely food or her intestine lining shedding - which seems both are ok.

I was just hoping to get a gage from the pros of this is “normal.” Thank you!

She is eating and drinking normally.

How old?
What exactly do you feed?
Have you brought any new to you birds home in the last few months?

2 years (we think, they were adopted :))
They have layer feed, garden delight treats, mealworms, or hentatastic for treats. ACV in water for about 3 days. No new birds

Thank you!

It's probably mealworms ... Treats & extras do affect the color of their poop at times. Looks like there's some dark "seeds" in that one pic, looks more orange than red ... Gonna say treats.

Is this the first time you noticed the coloring? Is there a treat that you recently started feeding? How long have you been feeding these treats/MW? Did they eat "more" than usual?

That is a normal poop. It is what is called "ceca poop" it is usually pasty, very smelly and varies in colors. Chickens have 2 sacs in their intestines that have some bacteria that digest the hardest and toughest stuff chickens eat, like the exoskeleton of insects. The pasty poop in your pic is coming from the ceca sacs and they poop it several times a day. I don't particularly like to clean it because it is so smelly :sick

Wow. I had no idea. I’m so grateful to you and the community!

Thank you so much. First time, we no longer have them free range as it’s winter here and hawks have been around. I think it’s the too many treats as you said. It’s been so cold so I have been a bit heavy handed with treats! I’m going to give them a break :)
