North Carolina

Out of desperation once, I took a heating pad, covered it in shavings and plugged it in....the Silkies LOVED it since they all huddle together to sleep.

I'm sure I saved all the research on them from last winter, but gosh only knows where I put it...lol

That has to be one of my biggest problems putting stuff up to have or read for later and not remembering where I put it. One day my kids will find it all though...

Have you seen the thread that talks about the heaters they make using cookie tins? Some use them to keep waterers from freezing and others use them as bun warmers.

A friend of mine has a mixed variety of chickens, including a few silkies. In her coop, which is an old cinder block building, she made a ladder type thing that she leaned against the wall. The chickens roost there at night, including the silkies who often are on the top rung. I have seen them jump from rung to rug.

Two questions: I make my babies warm oatmeal, but am wondering if the can eat the raw oats too.

#2 I am snowed in and running out of sunflower seed for the nonchicken birds. Can I put laying mash in the feeder? Anyone know if the finches, cardinals and such will eat that? I have a half a pound of dried meal worms, but if I put that out it will not last five minutes.

I doubt will we be down the mountain until Wednesday or Thursday, if we can get a hold of the plower.

Good news...my girls continue to lay. I only have five layers, and I have been getting two and three eggs a day.

Stay warm, as I am sure this storm is hitting everyone.

good morning Kathie~~I knew you'd be snowed in I don't know about specifically putting laying mash in the wild bird feeder, I DO know they eat it off the ground when I sweep out the barn. As for the oatmeal, I NEVER cook mine (lazy?) but do mix it with canned vegetables or some kind of nutritious liquid and the girls gobble it up.

All my neighbors snowed in the morning?? Woke up to about 5 inches and it's still coming down~~so beautiful...until I have to get out in it. Glad all the birds have food & water 24/7, but I know they want their cooked breakfast. Guess I'll bundle up and get to it

Good morning everyone
I did not start snowing till midnight but when I woke up there was already 8 inches on the ground. I have a random question but do all chickens love to eat snow? I have one hen that loves the snow, when we had the last snow she just walked thru 9 inches of it eating the snow as she went. The have 24/7 feeders and waterers but when it snows thats all she want to eat. Just wondering if I have a crazy hen

Hope everyone stays warm

Morning all

Not snowed in here on the East end. School was canceled, but it is just a dusting and flurries. Tomorrow the weatherman say icey conditions. So I am sure the kiddies will have another snow day. I have them taking down the ornament from the tree, then they will be bored the rest of the day.

My birds love to eat the snow. I have a 30-80 pole barn, open in the front. They hang out in there all day on snow days. At least they get out and its a dirt floor so they can scratch around and have a dust bath.

Stay warm

BHep? did you get your eggs? good morning all, it's only 22 compared to 3 yesterday morning, my dh was just out shovel a place for my little doxies to go potty and he says on top of what we already had we've probably got another 6 " so we will see most of Yancey co. already had close to a ft. before this started. Don't ya love the quietness of it though. My chickens came out for a little while yesterday to dust bathe under the wood shed[the only place theres dirt] but haven't seen hide nor hair of them this morning outside, Well ya'll have a great day and remember Spring is just around the corner,

Yes, I didn't realize the PO didn't open until 9:30. It felt like forever waiting. I received 8 sizzle eggs all intact. I set then Sat. night. I am eagerly waiting to candle them and see whats going on with them.
