ok, normally i am not one to really complain or cause trouble, but this situation has gotten out of control.

there is a girl on facebook from denton nc, who is buying other people's chicks and selling them as her own with major mark ups. the part that really irritates me, is that she is claiming to have NPIP chicks because the people she has bought the chicks from are NPIP (I am friends with 2 of the people she contacted for chicks) but she her self is not NPIP. i feel like this is not only unfair to her customers, but to the people she originally bought the chicks from. do i just sit on my hands and look the other way, or is there a way to make people realize that she is a fraud?

Will Raleigh do anything about it?

You are correct Ram, All birds carrying the "barring" gene will have a spot on the top of the head. In most cases, Males will tend to have a much larger uneven spot as well as be more of an "Ash" black body color instead of dark black. Females will have a smaller size spot but still a spot, sometimes not much smaller than the males and they will be a darker black body color than males. Barred birds are one of the easiest to sex at an earlier age, almost from birth.

Well...home from the doctors...looks like my incubator will be running for another few weeks as they won't even "check" to see if anything is happening for another week & a half. Basically, I just wasted over 2 hours of my time, driving there (it's an hour each way) just to say HELLO to a doctor for less than 5 minutes and leave. Haha...perhaps I will skip next week?!? Haha...jk

Looks like it's going to be a HOT one today. DH was planning on working only a half day, but someone just HAD to call an afternoon meeting,

so he's back to working a full day...at least the entire day is overtime!! While DD sleeps, I am going to wash & scrub out the "pond" for the ducks so we can get it partially dug into the ground either later this evening when it cools down or tomorrow!! Then...I just sit and wait until someone has some older ducks for me!! I don't know what kind of ducks yet though...so long as they are good with kids and aren't TOO loud, I don't think we'll care...suggestions duck people? I will have to "put my order in" from my BYC'er hatcher if it's something she doesn't already have...although chances of that happening are SLIM!!

As for adding to our hens...I'm thinking maybe a few EE (since I have one "mutt" who's a sweetie) for a little color variety and anything else that lays brown eggs and is colorful!! Suggestions there?? I may need to put in that order too... LOL, her bator is already full and running!!

I have a 5 month old and vividly remember those last few weeks of waiting, hated it! Especially the appts where they check your blood pressure then say they'll see you next week.Don't they know how hard it is for a women to get her round self ready to go and out the door at that point?!? I did skip my last appt before she was born, she came two days later so it was no biggie. Good luck!

Roo fest update:
I've decided not to drive the two hour round trip to trade my boys in for another straight run from the farm they came from. I went to the feed store and picked up 10 chicks, orpington and amaracana(EE?) pullets. I figure we need to just keep going with everything as planned and move the roos to the new coop. I'm going to use the roos to test out the coops preditor proofing and if it's safe to roam in the yard. I'd rather loss the roo's than my egg layers. Once the roos start crowing they have to be gone, I can only imagine how noisy 9 roos will be in my back yard. The gentleman at the feed store also agreed that it seemed suspicious that my straight run was all boys......Fingers crossed that the roos find some homes/freezers soon!

Just a bit of info about MG. My NPIP tester told me that 85% of backyard flocks in NC have or have been exposed to MG.

If that's the case then why is the disease such a big deal and why was I ever reccomended to cull them? I have decided to keep my ladies and have been treating them with tylan 50 orally by syringe for the past 3 days. They one that was really sick is doing much better and one of the RIR is even laying every day. The other 3 haven't started yet. I'm going to continue the treament for another 2 more days. How long before the eggs are edible again for humans? I think I remember 2 weeks, is that correct?

For the backyard keeper it is not a big deal, at least as long as they have good strong birds. Those can fight it off and it will be no more then a few sneezes that goes away. Culling was recommened to you by the state because NC is a BIG production state with those production houses full of meat birds all over the place. Those birds absolutely cannot handle MG or any other infection. Those birds are so screwed up that they have almost no immune systems and if one bird in one of those houses gets MG they all get it and can devistate the population of the house in no time. Money makes the rules.
