I'm sorry about your Lav and your chick BHep! That's the part of keeping chickens I am definitely not looking forward to.

I distinctly remember looking at the weather forecast last night and today is supposed to be SUNNY and NO RAIN!
I've got family in from out of town looking to do an Easter Egg hunt in our field, which is now nice and wet and getting wetter

My chickens like it though...it brings out the worms, which they adore fighting over. LOL

Bad news........ one of my Lav. Am. hens died this AM. Just dead, no nothing.

My black spli-for-lav Orpington roo, Toby, was found the same way this morning. No signs of anything; just dead. And he was less than two years old.

I'm at a loss to figure out what's happened to him. Any ideas on your hen?

With the warm weather from this, so called, winter...what does everyone do about fly control?

On a random note: we were at TSC last night and there was a customer getting chicks. As the employee was scooping up the chicks, the customer was asking what all they needed to keep the chicks. At first the employee was giving sort of general answers, but then she realized (and so did I), that the customer had absolutely NO IDEA what to do with chicks. What to feed them, where to keep them, nothing. Apparently they walked in, saw the cute little fuzzy chicks and decided to take some home. A concept that boggles my mind.

I'm wondering if they have any kind of plan for what to do when those chicks outgrow that little happy meal box TSC sends them home in - because it occurred to me that that was one question the customer didn't ask. She got a tub and a heat lamp and the start kit thing they sell for chicks with the food, but she didn't ask about where to keep them after that. Or what to feed them. And what's she gonna do when one of them (or all of them) gets sick? Plus, she asked about a rooster and the employee told her she didn't need one for eggs...but does she realize that she might have one whether she needs it or not?

Hubby thought I was being kind of anal about spending the last six months researching keeping small flocks of chickens (and of course, made fun). Then he was watching this little show play out with me. On the way home he says, "So I wonder when she's gonna realize she needs to build a coop?"

I think I'll avoid TSC until after chick season.

No clue... sudden chicken death syndrome. ????? I have JUST started getting eggs from that pen. I have 3 eggs, not even sure who was laying them.

The Dellie was smothered. It got a little cold last night, so I can see he was at the bottom of the pile.

Morning Everyone!!

So sorry to hear of the overnight losses everyone, maybe it has to do with the sudden cool down??

On a brighter note, my little chocolate is still with us this morning.

She is handling feedings well and it appears to be passing her crop. WOW is she a little fighter !!!!

she just hangs tight and lets the food and electrolytes take hold of her system. She has a long road to recovery but still being here after what she went thru yesterday sure does give me some hope. Speaking of hope, that is what I have named her "Hope".
