Somewhat of a victory, hubby was doing some yard work and paused to look over at the chickens happily scratching around in the run of the chicken tractor that he did an awesome job building, and he said you know those chicks are turning out to be nice looking chickens, I wondered there for a while what you had gotten into.  LOL He has been somewhat opposed to me having chickens all along. :weee I'm excited.  He is even trying to find me some buff orpingtons has a friend at work that has them, but he texted me this afternoon and said his friend's wife is not willing to give any of hers up, but that she would give us some eggs to hatch if we wanted....heee heee wonder if I could talk him into .....no that's pushin' but.... :/ after reading all of these posts about brooding hens and incubators.....:pop

:thumbsup Woo Hoo!! Congratulations!! Glad to hear the husband is finally getting the "fever". LOL!!

NH......glad you got the eggs and a visit.
Now I'm green with envy, hope I get a chance to meet you some day

:frow Sounds good to me!! We'll have to set something up one of these days for a BYC play date!! LOL.

Well...I have an egg thief!! Beth & Alex brought me some eggs for my 2 broodies and I found one of those marked eggs under Mama!! LOL, my Maran broody wouldn't take it, but my cochin grabbed it and stuffed it under her, so I am thinking it might still thrive. :fl If all works out well, we will have 12 new chicks coming up in 20-ish days!! :weee I am SO addicted!! Thank you to Beth & Alex for ENABLING my addiction!!

On a non-chicken note: HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY to all you mothers out there...whether you are a mommy to two legged rugrats, chickens or 4 legged friends!! DH surprised me with a gift of chocolate covered berries and a book!! He transplanted some of my squashes/melons to have more room in the garden, added more dirt to the potato box, watered/fertilized the orchard (which our BRAND NEW trees are actually producing fruit...well the Nectarine tree has one golf ball sized fruit on it) and the best news of all - my sewing room is FINISHED and we are in the process of organizing and rearranging the office/sewing room!! Here that Alex...soon DH's collection will be "properly" placed in the library "closet". LOL I am looking forward to hearing DH sing in a trio in church tomorrow (another SURPRISE) :yesss:

I hope all of you moms out there have a wonderful day tomorrow!!

Soooooo.....I have a question/survey to start off the day.

When I went to get the Langshan pair the seller claimed
they were 2 hens.
RF and I look over the first bird and agree it's a hen.
We look over the second bird and tell the seller this one
is a young roo. Of course the seller asks us why we think
this and we show her the saddle feathers starting to come in
and the hackle feathers that are starting to be pointy.
She says " No, it's a hen. Let me show you a trick an old man showed me.
He has had chickens for a long time."
While holding the bird around the body with the wings held against
the body, she flips the bird so it's head is pointing to the ground
and butt is up. When she does this the birds tail flips over so you
see vent and the bird spreads it's tail. She said that if the bird spreads
out/fans the tail, that means it's a hen. Of course this bird did exactly that
when she flips him over, spreads the tail out like a fan. "It's a hen" she says.
We again tell her all the roo characteristics it has to include the
pointy saddle feathers and hackles, how the tail does not split in the middle
like the hen and the large red comb and wattles means it's a roo.
I told her I'd still buy him but not at hen prices.

My question is have any of you heard of this tail spread trick to sex chickens?
Has it worked for you reliably ?

Thank you. I knew that that website was out there, just couldn't remember where. I looked on there and saw some beautiful horses. I'll be mentioning it to my mom once we get everything built. Now that may take a while

They and many more will be there when she is ready.

GA, I slit the throat....it lets a lot more of the blood drain. I've had really good luck with it.
I have tried that and thought it took way too long to for them to end. How long does it take for your and do they struggle? Maybe my technique is not very good.

This sounds tome like another of the old wives's tales. If it was a reliable way of of telling it would be posted all over this site and all the other places people talk about chickens. Your method of examining the the bird and looking for physical characteristics of roo is the more reliable way to go about sexing a chicken. Hens do not have saddle feathers at least all the breeds I am familiar with don't.

Happy Mothers Day !!!

CBS.... Old wives tale? But interesting to see if the trick works.
