I use 7 10 % dust on them, fire ants, the dogs and cats, and even once on a horse, just about everything

because it doesnt hurt them and is safe around the kiddos (dont know what happens if they eat it, which thankfully none of mine have yet)
Just a word of caution about Sevin dust. It is toxic to honeybees. It can wipe out a hive fast. Since it is a dust, they can carry it back to the hive on the hair on their bodies. I use it on my chickens but am careful not to use it outside my coops or chicken runs. I have beehives within 50 feet of my chicken coops. We can't get the 10% here in SC anymore....just 5% in small containers. I heard at a bee meeting last year that it was going to be taken off the market because it is so toxic to honeybees. Not sure when or if it will happen. I know we can't get the 5# bags of 10% anymore here. The Sevin in granules or liquid is safer to use around gardens and plants that bees go to.
Liquid Sevin sprayed on plants in late evening is dry by the next morning when the bees start to work. The chemical in Sevin is a poison since it kills the creepy crawlies. I try not breathe the dust and wash it off me asap if I get any on my skin (which I always do).

Hope all the NC folks have a warm day. I am a NC girl and love the mountains but as I get older, I do not miss the cold winter weather.

I've been doing some reading on Neem oil and Sulphur as alternatives to using chemicals.

Sulfur, Yuck. It will burn tender skin and I bet it will hurt their feet too on a roost. I use Pinee oil and olive oil mix on the roost. It prevents their poo from sinking in and also kills bugs. Neem for me is still up in the air. I use permethrin in the shavings and occ. Sevin 5% in the coop under fresh shavings to control bugs. On the hens for mites etc, I first use the permethrin. If it does not work I use the Ivermectin Pour on I/4 cc spot on their neck and two spots on their bussels. that takes care of it. If you use it by mouth it will be in the eggs, meat etc. but they tested the hens with it dropped on and none was in the eggs. I use my hens for eggs and fun.
Speaking of weather , here in franklin it is 40 degrees this morning. Hopefully the flea population will now drop outside. I am looking forward to one hard freeze. This has been a terrible year in this area for all bugs. My Cat has never had Fleas before with the drops I keep on her, but this year they are here on her. YUCK, I hate fleas. the Vet. even has had a hard time getting rid of them with Comfortis and Frontline Tritak.
PS I love this cool weather and when my wrist is much better I will enjoy it even more. I have been working as I could to build some wood framed boxes to transport my flock in about a month to the coast of NC. My wrist strenuously objects. gloria Jean

Anyone around Waynesville? how cold is it there?
It was a chilly 40 degrees there this morning. My friend lives just west in Maggie valley. Well on the pens are covered with tarps and if I remember right, I didn't cover them til the 1st week of Novemember last year!. The farmers raised in this area are swearing we'll have our 1st snow by Halloween! :celebrate. Got most of the chickens moved into the main coop. Found 3 roosters in my barn this morning! This is the second time somebody has decided that because I have chickens, they can just drop theirs here too! :he. Was able to catch'em and stick them in a quarentine pen. The look to be young EE boy.

I hate it when someone lets out their hens in the area. You never know what they might be carrying. I get a lot of" Well they got out and I could not catch them" from a close next door neighbor. Right now its down to a Lavender Guinea. She is pretty though and has been here for about 3 months now. She won't go just 50 feet back down the mtn to her home. Sigh! My Flock is in the wired yard so she just walks around eating bugs and stareing at them. Hope everyone has a great day. Oh just two or three years ago we had the heaviest snow we had all winter the last wk of Oct. Gloria jean

Yeah it sucks when drop offs of any kind show up. Most of mine are dogs a few cats, but last summer I had a beautiful game rooster show up and take up residence in the tree behind the turkeys.
