Just a word of caution about Sevin dust. It is toxic to honeybees. It can wipe out a hive fast. Since it is a dust, they can carry it back to the hive on the hair on their bodies. I use it on my chickens but am careful not to use it outside my coops or chicken runs. I have beehives within 50 feet of my chicken coops. We can't get the 10% here in SC anymore....just 5% in small containers. I heard at a bee meeting last year that it was going to be taken off the market because it is so toxic to honeybees. Not sure when or if it will happen. I know we can't get the 5# bags of 10% anymore here. The Sevin in granules or liquid is safer to use around gardens and plants that bees go to.I use 7 10 % dust on them, fire ants, the dogs and cats, and even once on a horse, just about everythingbecause it doesnt hurt them and is safe around the kiddos (dont know what happens if they eat it, which thankfully none of mine have yet)![]()
Liquid Sevin sprayed on plants in late evening is dry by the next morning when the bees start to work. The chemical in Sevin is a poison since it kills the creepy crawlies. I try not breathe the dust and wash it off me asap if I get any on my skin (which I always do).
Hope all the NC folks have a warm day. I am a NC girl and love the mountains but as I get older, I do not miss the cold winter weather.
