Ok question… I've got a silly Australorp(Bindi) who has decided she wants to be broody! :idunno should I break her? Or would it be okay to give her chicks? I've got chicks due to hatch on the 21st and I'd love to not have to brood them.

broody ??????? Its really acc. to the hen. Sometimes they will reject them and kill everyone, other times they may take them and rear them as their own. They have to have been broody for at least two weeks and setting on something. You would need to move the chicks in at night when she is truly sleeping and she can wake up with them under her. Try a few the first night and then add the others if she accepts them the next night. I had one hen that would accept anything thing

another that killed her own hatching chicks. ???

I would keep her on eggs and then switch out the eggs at lock down and let her hatch them.

Depends on the hen and how she is with chicks. A good mama hen will adopt anything anytime. I have a few these. One chased me into the house while I was carring a box of chicks from a hatchery. She wasn't even broody till I got out of my truck and she heard those peeps. Old mama suddenly appeared clucking her head off. She kept cutting me off trying to get me to put her chicks down. Sadly these chicks were some I had just went to pick up for a friend and was not keeping any.

Sorry, got side tracked. If she has proven to be a good mother I would give her eggs now. Switched those out daily for fresh ones. Once you have a couple eggs pip in the bator, put 2-3 of those under her and remove the fresh eggs. It is easier to make an adoption if she actually has a couple hatch under her. If she accepts them she should take all that hatch. If she accepts those I would add more as they hatch or are about 2 hatch. I add chicks during the day, NEVER at night. I want to see the hen's reaction. I don't want to go down in the morning and find dead rejected chicks. I cup a chick and slide it under the hen without her seeing the chick. I always do 2-3 at first. Then wait. Listen to see if she starts the mama cluck. When she clucks a chick should peek out. A good mama will talk and then push the chick back under. If she pecks it then you will have to raise them.

The longer she is broody the better, but I have had 2 different hens accept babies after being broody for a grand total of 4 days.

Okay thanks you guys :D I've got her sitting on a couple eggs that had been the fridge for a week(since all my hens have roosters) she had been a flighty lil thing for the 1st week(running whenever I got near her) but now she has hunkerd down and growls at everything  can't wait to see how she does. She was raised by my most awesome broody Lily. Hoping she is as good as her “momma”

Are you switching out the eggs? I have hatched refrigerated eggs twice in the past. The first had been in the fridge for almost 2 weeks. That was my very first 100% hatch.

Hello everyone ... I'm in Hope Mills, N.C., next to Fayetteville. I have been searching for Malaysian Serama hatching eggs or new chicks. If you know anywhere I could find them, please let me know. I also would like a few frizzles.

Thanks ... Hope everyone has a good evening ...

Do they ever have poultry shows in this area ?
