North Carolina

I have an order coming soon, but I don't think that most of you looking are near me. There should be a few extra in the lot, but most are already claimed! If I still have a few unclaimed a few days after they get here I will post, none are what you are looking, Luke. Sorry!

Hi all NC BYC members. I'm turning to you before I go to Craigslist.

I have a Speckled Sussex hen I need to re-home. She's 2 1/2 years old and a hatchery bird. I bought her as part of my first flock from a local farm and garden store. She's been a good layer. My problem is her temperment. I've come to the conclusion (with advice from BYC forum) that she is just plain mean and bossy. She's part of my original flock - and they all got along fine. Things have changed.

I started my flock with day-old chicks in March of 2010. In June of 2010, 2 of my "pullets" crowed during a thunderstorm and had to be re-homed. I happily had 4 hens, laying well and getting along fine. Last summer, 2011, I lost a Columbian Wyandotte hen to the heat. Down to 3 hens. July 2012 I added 3 day-old RIR chicks to my broody Speckled Sussex hen. She raised them just fine. My surviving Columbian Wyandotte hen even took over raising them when "mama" was done with them at about 5 weeks. This hen - Emmadine - has never accepted them. She almost pecked one of them to death when it was 4 weeks old. The chick somehow healed in isolation for 2 weeks, then went back to the flock. She went right back to attacking it and the other two every chance she gets. It never stops. Emmadine chases them away from food, treats, water and won't let them roost at night. Wherever Emmadine goes, the RIR's are on the opposite side of the chicken run. They RUN from her to get away every chance they get.

I have isolated her from the flock on 2 different occasions hoping that removing her would change the "pecking order" and her behavior. She just spent the last week in isolation again. This evening I put her back in with the flock who were already roosting. She went right into the coop and started pecking at the RIR's. She even had a beak full of feathers! The poor RIR's are terrified of her.

I've decided that if I can't change her behavior, I think she needs a new home. I'm hesitant to put her on Craigslist. I know I have no control over what happens to her once she leaves my coop, but she's nice to me, and nice to my other hen. She just hates the RIR's and I can't stand seeing them constantly being tortured by her.

If there's anyone out there who has room for a Speckled Sussex hen in their flock please message me. I can meet you somewhere.

Thank you all for any advice/suggestions as well.

Cecily

I wanted to post here before Craigslist. I have standard Easter Egger chicks ranging from 2-8 weeks of age $3 ea. or 5/$10 straight run, I also have a small flock of 5 bantam Cochins $80 4 females and 1 male (blue, black & lavender) excellent for breeding. We hatched a LOT of gorgeous chicks from this flock! Located in North Lexington. PM me if interested - NPIP.

Does anyone know of a good feed store within 30 miles of Raleigh, NC? I'd like to get my chickens some feed that is better than dumor!

Thanks.

Good Morning, Everyone!

Welcome to the new folk! Jump in and make yourself at home!

I got my official release from quarantine paper in the mail yesterday. I think I may frame it and the orange quarantine sign side-by-side. Or not.

The one hatchery ended up calling me back several times the other day. First to tell me that one bird ordered wasn't going to be available. Ok. then to tell me that the other two I ordered from them wouldn't be available either. Ok, it's late in the season. got it. Then to tell me that they may be able to get me some of them, and earlier than I had asked for, because of the hurricane and not being able to ship into that area. I might get chicks next week that were meant to go northeast. We shall see. My order from the other hatchery is on schedule, so I'll still get chicks. The brahmas, GL Wyandottes, Welsummers and EE were from that one, so I'll have a good start. I'll order more in the spring regardless. From somewhere and someone.

Off to orthotics this morning to get my brace repaired. Hopefully. Then to work. I should be able to come home early, as they are going to make yet another attempt to fix our heater today. Yes, it is still not working! Hubby is keeping it pretty reasonable in here with the fireplace, but it only reaches so far in the house. At least it's not January.

Have a great day, everyone!

all new flockers

Well a first ever that I know of, the kids are off today. Why not tomorrow so they ( I ) can rest after trick or treating tonight. And adults that go to party's have a day to rest after wards???

So whats everyone gonna be for tonight?? I got a rooster (probably for the last year) a dino/ dragon and frog (if I don't kill her first)

My son was off for Monday here in Davidson County. And I agree; the more LOGICAL day would be tomorrow. Many kids will stay out past their bed times tonight and will end up hyped up on candy. Maybe we should all say a prayer for teachers and daycare workers tomorrow.

I have a red cape to be Red Riding Hood and my son wants to be a WWII soldier.
