North Carolina

I picked up my chicks early this mornig, but have been busy. When we got them open one looked like it did not make the trip. I put all of the others under the lamps and looked back at it and could see that it was breeting just a bit. I had to go to PT, so Robin took it home with her to keep it warm.... I don't think it is coming back here. Onece it was warmmed up and got something in it; all the sudden it is chipper, and peepin.

I hope everyone has a good day. I have got to lie down for a bit.

OMG!!!!!!

I think the missus would kick my butt outside to the barn with Shorty the horse iffen I ever had that many in her laundry room....

I've got all my crossables crossed for you to get that land! Hubby was a city boy until I got him out here. He'll never go back. If I hadn't gotten sick, we'd have a set-up similar to your description, except we'd have two cows...one who'll take foster calves to raise. Then she can raise the offspring of both of them for meat, whilst I milked the other. (That's how my folks did it and it worked nicely.)

I do know where you can get sheep next summer. I know several sheep folk with different breeds, but you may prefer Frisians for milk. I can put out feelers for those. Goats are everywhere. For both of those species, make sure you get CAE free...tested free...stock. That's a nasty disease, and it's common. Better to spend a touch more and get clean animals, no matter what breed you decide on. I wouldn't buy at an auction for those, as you want them to produce food for your family.

If you aren't familiar with the NC Agricultural Review, google it now and check it out, including the ads.

You're going to be just fine!
Hollow - I think I will be asking you LOTS of questions in the near distant future regarding all things sheep & goats!! Please do keep feelers out there for me, I only went with the Frisians because my MIL wants to card & spin the wool and I read they were the best for milk and had a coat that was acceptable to card/spin. If there are others out there, I'd be open to suggestions!!

You have been so helpful so far too!! Hmm....I may need to hit you up on more details on the foster calving process as well. However, I must not count my chickens before they hatch (an acceptable cliche, right?? hehe).

Speaking of chickens...I AM SO HAPPY THAT YOURS ARRIVED TODAY!! I know you now feel "complete" again. Be sure to keep us updated on them all!!

I didn't get as much done today as I planned. Seemed everything I needed to do took me by the brooder house and of course I had to check on the babies.

It's amazing how much time you can lose staring at them.

I did get the adjacent chicken house cleaned out again. It never had a sick bird in it, and neither did the brooder house, so I'm not at all concerned about them. Still, bleach is always my friend. Tomorrow I'll tackle the new chicken house again. It and the grow-out area in the rabbit barn is where the sick birds were. It'll be ready for them to move down there by spring, which is when I plan on them going! The Orps will stay in the house I cleaned out today. It's further from the road. If I get any two-legged predators, I want them taking hatchery birds instead of show birds for supper!

Have a good evening, everyone!

Good Morning, Everyone!

I have chickies to check on this morning! How wonderful!

I didn't realize how depressed I had been without chickens on the place.

Having them back makes a huge difference in my life.

After a lot of discussions with hubby, we've decided to accept a puppy from my friend...IF there is one of suitable temperament. I'll have to put a leash on puppy fever

and be logical there

, but the pup won't be much good to me if it's either skittish or aggressive. It needs to be inquisitive and even-tempered. So, we'll wait and see if I get another pup or not.

X-ray on the female yesterday showed a minimum of ten pups in there.

The odds are in my favor!

Have a great day today!
