did you lose birds Chasity??

Well, I don't normally make pets outta birds, you know how the favorites always die first! Well one sumatra youngster is trying real hard to be a pet. To the point that it followed dad (the feed person) outta the coop last night. Before that it had hitched a ride on my foot as I walked through the pen checking on everyone and runs up to you when you come in the pen to be held. Well if dad doesn't keep it as a pet, I guess the kiddos will have a pet (can't be mine as it will surely die

Sorry Chasity, I Know we all just had this conversation a few days ago, but I hope if the dog returns you give him a double barrel surprise....
Loss or no loss, people have to learn to control their animals....

Yes, We lost 4 RIR hens And Coyote Bait (RIR roo/ survivor from last years coyote attacks) from one breeding run, and we lost 2 Ameraucanas and 2 EE hens in the other.

The Ameraucana roo is at large in the woods right now, and a bit freaked out. If that big black animal comes back now... It is real stupid, and I will Finnish the job! I knew it would comeback because it left one alive out there. I need to go find a way to get the roo back up to the back lot where the bear traps, and pred lights are.. I think it will help him to be with the others. He was not hatched here and may not know how to get up there.

Once upon a time the birds had run of the woods, but they liked to come up to the porch to roost at night, and I got tired of power washing the porch every morning. Wild Thing would have already got up there.

Any ideas on how to show him the way?

...and yes the faves are always the first ones to get killed. Today I only have 1 really old bird from my first six.

Meanwhile I am waiting for the nosy neighbor across the front lot to call the law on me, and make me wish I hit it the second time. It ran across the street and I did not want to take the chance of hitting her house.

I think I am all cried out now, and just want to try my best to move forward, after these steps backward. Strange I did not cry until after I shot him. Also, may replace some of the girls lost, the ones in the Amer/EE group were laying light blue, deep Blue, green, and pink, they were selected just for this male.

I just want to cry, a dog has gotten into my runs oon the fron lot.

...and NO! I don't feel sorry for him if the thing comes back

I have a present waiting for him. I hope my little guy does not want to go up to visit them today.
I'm so sorry! It's only been a few weeks since I had dog/s kill 18 of mine, so I know how it feels. I hope you get a good shot at it.

:caf Good Morning everyone :frow having a slow start this morning, its soooo cold and windy here. :th I'm ready for spring.

Chasity- :hugs I'm soooo sorry for your loss :hugs

NH- I will take you up on that. I love the idea of a meat bird that can free ranger and still get meaty. So yes please, please share you experience with :D thanks.

The neighbor told me it was a dog, but this is what it looked like????

I did not read to see if they are in our area, but at the distance I was at. this is what it looked like. I only really could see the tall thin buld, pointy ears, and what it was eating when I shot.
.

The black coloring on a coyote is extremely rare, it is a mutation that isn't very prevalent here. It is more commonly found in coyotes in Canada and Alaska.

My cousin has a German Shepard/ husky mix that looks almost exactly like that.

Chas - I am so sorry for your loss!! We'v seen a lot of stray dogs/wild dogs around lately too - but fortunately for us, the wild boar do not take kindly to ANY dog/coyote in their area and so they steer clear of our immediate area! I do hope you are able to find out what it was and we will be saying an extra prayer for you and the youngsters!!

Chasity, sorry for the loss. Coyotes are such a problem these days. It's always make me feel eerie when I hear them howling at night. Luckily, our neighbor has a grand pyrenes who seems to sleep during the day and roam and protect the neighborhood at night.

Anyone rooting for snow this weekend?

I wouldn't mind a little snow. If nothing else to see how my teenagers and kids handle it. The older girls will not leave their run unless I clear a path, but the newer guys have been really fun and adventurous. They hop the logs I sit on just to be with me, peck stuff off me. They go places no one else goes, but with our watch cats and dogs are always safe.

Chasity, You do what you have to do. breaks my heart when I have to take an animal down, but family always comes first and my animals are part of that family... I think it is just a dog. I know we don't get any coyotes in my area. And if we do, they don't come around here...

A awesome nice day today before another cold spell and maybe rain,

. another reason I would not mind some snow. Some areas here are pretty guckie and it needs a break to dry up. All my chickens are out enjoying the sun and any new bugs that have reappeared. Yesterday was an awesome Chicken TV day as I believe today will be.

Everyone enjoy the day...
