Good morning everyone.. My rooster got attacked yesterday morning. I gave him a warm bath and washed all the blood off. Put some vasealine on his comb and wattles. Well this morning one of his eyes are swollen shut. What can I put on his eyes???
just use a warm damp wash cloth to soak it some and wipe it to open it. The eye swelling should go down. Keep the area clean by just wiping it with a warm damp wash cloth. Good luck

Seems like most of you here on this site stay home and have a large scale "farm-like" homestead. Kinda feel out of place with my 6 chicks. I work full time (4 day s a week - 10 hours per day). Just doing this as a hobby and for the fresh eggs. Anyone else out there like me?
I have heard so many saying they need to get more chicks than they really want because of chicks dying. Thankfully, mine are doing well and seem healthy. They really love spinach leaves and clamor to the door of the pen when I come by hoping for a treat. I hold on tight while they all peck away at each leaf. Don't seem as thrilled about broccoli though.
We do have one smaller chick that I keep an eye on. Kinda the runt of the group. She's also the most friendly when it comes to sitting in my hand. They are about 2 weeks old now.
No most of us are small scale. And the birds are hobby/ pets thats make food for us

And don't worry before long you will have more than 6 birds as you get hit with chicken math

Quote: Also, if there is something in it, Get a new bottle of Saline spray, and you can turn it up and spray it in his eye. He will not like it, but it will help nature do its job, and not cause harm. I have used it in my own eyes, and it does not feel great but it gets the job done. We had a roo with a swollen eye and It really did help. His eye had been swollen for several days, and I did wipe and all, but it needed a little more.

Hope he feels better soon, and it goes down for you quickly.

We have a home flock for a hobby as well.. we to started with chicks which quickly turned to 8 then 10 and now I have 15 with 6 new ones coming. My pseudo wife and I work full time as well.
AS we all dream of the huge land with many farm animals. Chickens are the gateway farm animal for sure.
Good luck with your new ones we started last year around this time as well

Good morning folks

I do not like this new format for BYC.
I'm finding it difficult to find anything and

little emoticons.......booo. This is giving me
a sour mood and that is not how I want to start
my day.......hope your day is a good one.

hey if u go to the bottom of the page u can change it to either mobile or desktop i know it confused me at first too

So hopefully today I will be picking up a nice shipping crate to build my second coop. going to go smaller this time with a green roof to grow a bunch of herbs on should be a fun project. Just waiting for my mechanic to call and tell me my truck is finished! I will post some pics as i go

where do you find your shipping crates??? I mean, it can't hurt to ask..

seems everyone is hording their scrap wood etc. No building going on in the area. pallets are now being kept and returned to the places that ship them. Times be hard when shippers want their pallets back.... Talking about the ones, feed and other stuff is shipped to the local stores... My feed store use to be a great place to get them, but since last year, they have to have them pick-up and reused...

Lucky I have control of the chicken math... No room, no new chickens... have room, maybe.....

Enjoy this nice but a little brisk day. More rain is due...

NH, one thing I learned after being raised on a homestead with cows, goats, chickens, etc., and then researching for years while hubby was in the military...researching is only good to a point. The hands-on is the make or break. Lots of things looked good to us on paper and with my childhood memories, but did NOT work for us at all. Guineas, for example. Loved them as a kid, hated them on our place. I love geese and muscovies, but again, they don't work on our place. Tried them both out. Even though I was raised handmilking cows, it's only been after 10 years on our place that I decided to give a go at raising meat calves. Even a nice, gentle cow can hurt someone, and not even notice, just because of their size.

All that babbling is to say...make sure you get some apprenticeship time working with cows before you buy one. Enough that you know you want to do all that is necessary. Then you'll know if that's what you want. But I'm a little gun shy. You would not believe the notebooks full of research I did over 20 years of military time, waiting until we got our place. There are still a few things I'd like to try, but there are LOTS of things that I tried and that just did not work for us at all. Lots of money and time was invested because I figured all that research made me knowledgeable. But it's not enough without the hands-on. I should have known better, too. I'm a biologist, for Pete's sake. I know all the research is preliminary, but I somehow didn't apply that to myself.

Not trying to be discouraging; just realistic. This forum is so enabling and Rah! Rah! Rah! that it's easy to get in over our heads. I'm learning self-control here! Hard learning curve, too!
Hollow - as always, thank you for your words of wisdom!! I do plan on doing a LOT of hands on "research" before we take the "leap" into getting livestock of this caliber. I am hoping once the back acreage is fenced in, to "borrow" one of their beasts as a learning experience (they have offered). Still, I do NOT make these decisions lightly...I researched chickens for 2 years before ever getting any (and see where THAT has led me!! LOL). Since livestock of this size are NOT something you can just rush into, we're trying to get as much information as we can before deciding what is best while getting some hands-on learning as well. Basically, our goal is to have to shell out as little money as possible for all of our daughter's special food. If we can supplement in ANY way, it is something that we are looking into.

On a fun chicken note: My new girls seem to think that whenever I steal <ahem I mean borrow> my husband's barn boots to run outside that my feet are perfect little snacks. LOL, I can't tell you how many times I have been walking trying NOT to step on one, when one decides to jump on my foot and "attack" the shoe lace or peck at my foot sloshing around in his shoe! I LOVE the personality these girls are exhibiting!! Also...

Tyrone attacked a guinea today after it was picking on one of the girls!! I will say, he did get gained up on by the rest of the guineas (escaping of course) but he at least showed ONE who was BOSS of the pullets!! LOL. DH is thinking about processing the guineas for several reasons - the biggest is to appease the neighbors. Found out the other day that they were "wandering" down to our LEAST friendly neighbor's house and "bothering" them. We can't contain them - so it looks like it might be the end for them.

Still trying to figure something out, but it's doubtful.

Now to spend the afternoon cuddling with 2 sick kiddos. Tomorrow is D DAY for us (21weeks...just over HALF WAY DONE!!). DH has decided that we ARE finding out what we're having (unlike with the previous ones)...so stay tuned (those of you who are interested...LOL)
