Seems like most of you here on this site stay home and have a large scale "farm-like" homestead. Kinda feel out of place with my 6 chicks. I work full time (4 day s a week - 10 hours per day). Just doing this as a hobby and for the fresh eggs. Anyone else out there like me?
I have heard so many saying they need to get more chicks than they really want because of chicks dying. Thankfully, mine are doing well and seem healthy. They really love spinach leaves and clamor to the door of the pen when I come by hoping for a treat. I hold on tight while they all peck away at each leaf. Don't seem as thrilled about broccoli though.
We do have one smaller chick that I keep an eye on. Kinda the runt of the group. She's also the most friendly when it comes to sitting in my hand. They are about 2 weeks old now.
I work fulltime also. My daughter and I started with 6 chicks last March. Then we got 4 more a couple of weeks later and then a friend gave us some more. We got hit with chicken math pretty quick. We now have 17 all around 1 year old. We mainly got them to have some fresh eggs and something to try and keep us busy. Well we definately have both of those now but we get to watch some chicken tv and have some good laughs. Good luck with your hobby,

Heres my 2 Ivy and Jeeves. House kitties only. We have let Ivy look at the chickens but she rather watch the birds in the pine trees.

This is our rescued cat named Cash. I found him as a baby at the bank last August. I did a double take when I went out to get eggs this afternoon. Apparently he thought there was something he needed to hatch! No easy feat to get in there. The nest boxes are about 3 feet off the ground.....
Love the kitty. He looks like he is smiling

Thanks for the encouragement - TarheelBirdy. Just moved to this home last October and trying to keep up on all the landscaping the former owners took pride in. Now I've added to my work by bringing in chickens - what was I thinking:) I do feel a lot more informed since here at BYC. Hoping it all just starts flowing together and not too overwhelming.

Changed the chicks bedding this past weekend from wood shavings to sand (could only find play sand for now). Found a cool sifter tool in the kitchen section at Wal-mart. Need to find a small-combed rake to gather the droppings in one section better. A work in progress.

The girls are getting bigger and more social each day. They no longer run to the far end of the pen when I come by. Guess they know where the treats come from:) Have only tried spinach leaves and broccoli so far. They aren't much for broccoli but love love love spinach. I hold onto the leaves as long as I can as they nibble it down.

Loving the sunshine today. Here we will be getting rain tomorrow and Friday (of course on my day off).
Enjoy your day everyone!

It's hard to keep landscaping with chickens. I've sortof gotten over that. They love to dust and scratch in the flower beds.

Well, the wife has said I can hatch more eggs... She has set the rules though.... WHEN they hatch, either trade, sell, or eat... That's a fair deal I think... Especially when she is going to help... On a side note, the wife and I just put our seeds in trays tonight... Always bought the plants ready to go in the garden ... Just an experiment, but its gonna be awesome if we are successful...

Well thast it  :he :rant neighbors stupid giant dog just jumped up and yanked my rabbit cage from the roof of the barn! The cage was bolted and chained to the roof, 4 ft in the air. The dog just yanked it down, killed one of my bucks and now I have to go hunting for my two prego does!!! :rant  the dog is a large 120+ lbs mastiff and while I love the breed I hate this dog! Last month, he ripped open a coop, didn't kill anything, but still ripped the wire and door off. And back in the fall, I had to replace my dog fence because he basically trampled it!! Ugh and the owners are just idiots who also have chickens that don't give a crap about!! :rant you know what they live on like 20 acres and have a huge expensive house you think could afford some fricking fencing to contain their dogs!

Ok sorry about the rant.... thanks for listening.
