Just trying to get as much done before work goes crazy next week.. this has been a fun project so far trying to use what I have to make this work. Free stuff from craigslist and the crate $30 I think so far i have $70 with the hardware cloth.. which is really expensive

I know i will need some hinges for doors trying to keep it under $100 total.. I think it is doable!
So, how far from Alamance county are you, and would you deliver the coop? LOL! That looks great, and I love the price.

I have a coworker who has a 8x8 coop that she will give away for free, but its too big for us. I'm considering going over with my son and dismantling it for the free wood. Anyone want to join me? Its (the coop) in Orange county....

Meg.......Mule City Feeds in Benson does bulk sales
and even will do custom mix if you buy a ton/pallet or
at least they use too.

JD...........if you aren't too picky about your hardware
cloth/wire, you could ask for the stuff at road construction
sites......the stuff they use to hold the gravel around the
future manhole/drainage grates. I ask for it and they are
happy to give it to me. It may be a bit bent in a few spots
but for free I can work it out or cut and patch to what
I need.......all they do is throw it away after they pull it up.

just a few thoughts trying to help.

Hey WILD I know stray cats can be a pain in the butt when I was little I had a pet cat and we would be woken up in the idle of the night by two stray cars beating up our cat up against our window until it died ); my dad actually liked that cat and he spent the next day hunting the down and shooting them u gotta do what ya gotta do

Anyways I think somebody was asking about how to keep chips out of waterers? I put a wire panel underneath my watered and it helps but the little chickies just love kickin stuff around!

I hope it stops raining! So I can work on my breeding pens!!! Gonna candle some eggs and maybe sing some laying eggs songs to my hen that's only layed two eggs for me this year so far everybody have a wonderful and blessed day!!!!!!

Good Saturday morning everyone!! I think we officially NEED a boat to navigate around our yard because it is just a MESS!! The ducks are LOVING it, but the rest of us are not!!

Hope you have a great day, nothing planned here!!

Good Morning, Happy, Soggy Chicken People!

Lots of rain and more mud than I would like. I've got to get some of these chickies out of my house today, for sure!

So far I've tried all kinds of bedding for the chicks and different feed/water methods. The easiest was to use "dog towels"...I buy cheap towels at Sam's for the dogs, and then use packs of the hand towels under the youngest chicks. Easy to switch out each day, shake out, and toss in a bleach wash every couple days. And they only get used for the animals. But when the chicks get bigger they don't work so well. The pine pellets are working best for me. A layer that barely covers the floor of the brooder is just right, as every bit of moisture gets absorbed, and swells the pellets. A spilled water bottle will get completely absorbed, and it still won't be a muddy mess to clean up! Plus, it really keeps odor down.

I've tried water bottles like you'd give a rabbit, and while the chicks figure them out quickly...they leak. And if they don't leak, some bright chick figures out how to play with it and make it drip. They'd be good over wire floors, but I can't do that inside. I went back to the regular waterers. I just raise them a bit and make sure the hole is "downhill". Once they start scratching, though, whatever bedding you use will end up in the water.

I just got some guinea pig cages, with deep pans, like five inches or so. Those work really well for me. I was using totes, but coming up with ways to do brooder lights was getting difficult. With the wire tops on the cages, it's much easier, and the pans keep most of the mess in. When they really get to scratching, nothing will work better than a tub, though.

The best of all is brooding outside! I'll have to sort out where to set these up in the barn for future use. In the house in a room with carpet is not cutting it.

So there's my fifty cents worth on this rainy morning, such as it is. Enjoy your day, everyone!

HollowOakFarm: thanks for your ".50" worth:)
Thankfully, my brooder is on bare floors so the mess sweeps up. The plastic liner I put in yesterday seems to be working well and raising the feeder tray doing well too.

This rain is not convenient at all. No yard work today! Maybe I'll just get some meal planning done.

Quote: If she really wants to give it away, I could prob get the hubby to go get it for me, so he does not have to build at least one more!

If so, pm me info or pics to show him. At the very least, if there is damage, and still good, we can salvge what is good. We recycle a lot! Our first coop out here we used mostly recycled maerials, but the big hen house was quite costly. Right now he is building some topbar hives for catching bee swarms in.

Luke -- I don't know how far you are with your hives, but he did find a good deal on rough cut cedar for the Top Bar Hives. He used a bunch of my bee's wax on them to prime them with (poutting)...

In other chicken news, still have chicks pip'n, and even though I lost a nice 2 sets of breeders, I will get a few from at least one of the groups that had already been laid; one so far, and another is working on getting out today.

Yesterday I met with a nice lady that shares our addiction, and she got the boys' bird to take home, and we brought home a different little bird, from right up the the road from where we left hers. I thought it would be fun after his bath last night to post pics on FB to try to pick his new name. We are making a game out of it. I'm sure the kids would love to see all the names that people come up with..

Have a great rainny yucky day everyone!
