Spring can't come soon enough for me. I love getting up, grabbing a cup of coffee and going outside to listen to the flock waking up. Eggs?! We've got eggs! Our chicks that we got back in September started laying back in January. We are now averaging a dozen a day. The eggs are too small for hatching, but good eating. We were able to thin out our boy problems without taking them to a processor. Ten of them have gone to good homes. We still have two Barred Rocks and one RIR that need to be relocated. We are looking for two Lavender Ameraucana hens for our big boy Blue. He is the one in my avatar picture. His current harem consists of New Hampshire's and the new RIR ladies. Since we were successful with our first chick round, I want to build an incubator and try my luck at hatching this year. ABchicken, I might try to get my wife over to see your place this weekend.

Good morning all! I've been off the computer this weekend, so had a lot of catching up to do! Over 100 posts to read through on this thread alone!

We got two new ducks to help settle down our drake (he was chasing two of my bantam hens), and after a short quarantine of a week, we let them out to find the others on Saturday. That did not go very well. No fighting, but the new girls tried to wander off, they wouldn't stay with the other two ducks and drake. So we put all five in the quarantine pen late Saturday morning, and didn't let them out again till yesterday. They are all staying together now. We just need to come up with a name for one of the new girls. They are both grey "pencil" IRs, my drake is a fawn and white "pencil". We named one girl Cheeky since she's got big grey patches on her face, and she was the biggest problem duck on Saturday, leading the other girl away!

Over the weekend, hubbys parents came over for supper on Saturday, and he proceeded to tell them that once our chickens die, we won't be getting anymore, but only having ducks for eggs! Well, I put my foot down about that! I told him, we'll always have chickens, because I don't mind eating duck eggs in baked goods, but I notice a slight flavor difference eating them plain, so I still need my chicken eggs! No way am I letting him "phase out" the chickens!

Well, I hope you all have a good day!

Okay, I have the flyer for the Local Foods Connection Conference on March 22. I've had a couple people pm me their interest, but I think I'll need email addys to send these two documents. One is a pdf. So, if you don't mind, pm me your email addys and I'll send you the information! It's going to be fun, and we'll learn a lot!

Hollow - thanks for the information. Haha, if I had been "with it" this morning, I would have thought to actually Google pictures.

I think I may be awake, just not mentally alert. Haha. ETA: I forgot to tell you that for some reason up North (in CT) we use to call those things "Gypsy Moths" - not sure why, but that's what I've always known them as.

LOVE learning something new.

Just wanted to issue a warning...if it rains today, it's my fault. Hung up some diapers on the line as it is suppose to be sunny and 60 - usually that means I doom myself to cloudy skies and rain. Just thought I would forewarn you all!! LOL

Good afternoon everyone, it is raining here AGIAN :th I swear my well is about to flood. Just placed a couple chicks, I've got 6 runner ducklings(blue, black, fawn and white, and chocolate) coming from efowl in a couple weeks. At the end of April I'll have 35 chicks coming in from meyer, an assortment of layers and some freedom rangers.
While I am still planning to breed some pretty birds for out of awesome stock, it has happened, our farm is making the switch to more self sustaining. We are going to get a breeding pair of meat rabbits next month. Got an order of quail coming at the end of July. Gonna raise up the freedom rangers. And my friend and I are talking about split a bull cow. Trying to save up money to buy a goat fence, and a bred nanny. And got our idead for a couple raised garden beds under way.
Hope you all have a great day and if it should rain near you, stay dry :)

Good morning everyone! The kids went out and played in the coop with the chickens this morning. I am hopefully get a roost built for them and installed while the kids are taking a nap. Hubby might be home for a little while this afternoon so I can maybe get it done then if not during naptime.

Also got a question about a place for them to dust bathe..... what do you guys put in there for the chickens? Not sure I know what to do about that part.....

Thanks everyone for all of your advice so far. You guys are a wealth of knowledge!
