hey chicken dad u should start counting the days the day she started sitting on them and do not help the chicks hatch unless its been a day since it pipped usually the ones that need help wont be strong enough to make it anyways....good luck!!!!

I've never seen guineas do any of the things they're "known" for being good at. Not eating more bugs than chickens, eating fire ants, or warning of predators. All mine were ever good for was eating and attacking my roosters in gangs.

Guineas don't eat fire ants.

chicken dad:
Chick under a broody don't require any help. Chicks hatch themselves and Mama take care of them.

Ashley:
Wyandottes come in large fowl and bantam. Other then that, just different colors and that is your preference.
FYI: RIR are not the nicest birds. IMO
You can get any type of chicken you like. If you are looking to breed them, then pick a breed or two and have separate coops. If you just want some pretty hens...then pick whatever you want.
When ordering your chicks ...and IF you only want hens..then do yourself a favor and order pullets only. Worth the extra $.

to all the new folks !!

I loved our guineas when they were younger! and they seemed to keep the ticks and garden bugs away. But they did attack our roosters and I didn't like that at all. We decided just to focus on chickens this time. Our guineas ended up teaming up with our neighbors guineas and spent more time at their house then ours (which is okay with me) They still roam our garden area and that is all I really care about anyways. :)

Hello to all the new people. I have a question for the experienced people out there. I'm letting one of my Silkies try and hatch some eggs. I've never hatched any before. Right now she has 12under her. When and if any of them start to hatch, will I need to help them finish breaking through the shell or will she do it. I wasn't planning on hatching any, but a friend wants some for his wife. Also when do I start counting the days till hatch date? Thanks for any help with this.

It's best to let them zip and hatch out on their own. The only thing I would keep an eye on besides temp is humidity so they don't get stuck to the shell....nature does just fine most of the time. :)

We're going to be ordering our chicks soon and are really interested in Buff Orpingtons, RIRs, Speckled Sussex, and Wyandottes.  Will these breeds get along well if we have a variety of them, or is it best to stick with a 1 or 2 breeds? I'm sorry if this is a silly question...I'm very new to all of this :)

***also, I know there are different types of Wyandottes, does any recommend a specific kind?

Breeds should get along fine. Only difference would be making some accomodations for bantams and silkies with the roost. We always do 2 of a breed at least so no one is lonely. We used to call our barred rocks "the barred rock" gang because they stuck together and would travel in a pack.

I, personally, like diversity, and not to have any oddballs. I've got one bantam chick that is the only obe, and hopefully, I can find another one. :)
