I also had to get rid of a rooster. He was as sweet as roosters can be but just had a lot of time on his hands. He was wearing my poor girls out. I finally decided it was time to get rid of poor Henry Jones Jr. I, the same as you could not process my Henry. I have a friend that stays out past Linden, he said you can come let Henry stay out here! So I was like, cool man, got Henry a new home. So we packed up the truck and Henry and I went for a drive. Now my buddy is definately the definition of redneck, at least he is from this city critters point of view. If it doesn't invole mud, beer, guns, bait or a tractor; he is not usually interested. But on this day he had just so happen bought hiis three year old son a couple ducks. He took his eager, all boy, son down to their pond and let the ducks go. That didn't work out needless to say, the ducks were like thanks buddy, I'm out! So here comes Jeremy (that's me) and Henry a few hours later. Reluctantly I took Henry out of his cage and held him, we toured the property arm in tow. I took Henry down to the out buildings my buddy has because as a true redneck you must have at least two working out buildings. In some counties I have heard that it is 2 working and one delapitated requirement but anyway back to the story... one building is perfect, has some cover over it with a light and all. Keep in mind when visiting a true redneck there will be plenty of stuff in the yard to build a chicken coop out of. I found a old pallet and a couple of buckets. One bucket for water and one for food. Leaned the old pallet against the faded paint barn and tin roof on it. But before setting Henry down looked deep into his beety eyes with his comb hanging to one side and said bye to him. Meanwhile my buddy and his son are in the backround getting some bread prepared to feed Henry. Henry immediately sits on the perch and hangs out for a min checking out his surroundings. Eventually he gets down and starts his circle around the building, I guess he is checking things out at this point. He let's out a few crows and I thought to myself, hey!...this birds happy now. So we hung out with Henry, by the barn, and my buddys son did all the feeding. Now Henry is a free man, nothing holding him back! I thought this dang bird will be gone in a few days, lost in the woods or eaten by a fox for sure.
The next couple days go by and I call my buddy each day asking how Henry is. He always says, he's fine...stays down by the barns most of the time. Well is the crowing bothering you? Nah...His hollerin isn't a big deal. Are you still feeding him bread? Yep, he seems to like it. Ok, I will talk with you later then!? About a week goes by and I call again... in my mind I'm thinking Henry is gone by now... Hey man, how is Henry doing? He's fine, comes up by the porch now when I get home. Paces back and forth by the back door just peering in, like he is thinking...you comin out yet? You comin out now? Ok how about now? I said, well that's cool! Maybe he will stick around then. I hang up and I'm thinking, boy I got rid of a cool *** rooster. Well since Henry seems to be a pet now I'm going to go and get him some real food. So I make my monthly run to the feed store and get my supplies. I bring the food out to my buddies house to visit Henry. Lo and behold I pull up to the property and the Bull Mastife, the cat and Henry are chillin on the front porch like life long buds. My buddy proceeds to tell me how everyday he comes home he sees Henry hauling tail, he said like a nascar driver, up to his truck. He said he can't even hardly get out of his truck without Henry swooping around him for some attention. And probably to make sure he doesn't get forgotten for the dinner bell. He goes into the house, henry pacing at the front door, to handle feeding the other animals. Then comes out and feeds Henry. He said he can come out randomly and call Henrys name and within seconds Henry's face will appear! He said he didn't know a chicken could move that fast! I laughed for hours even days over this! Who would have thought a rooster could have so much personality! Henry is still fine today and apparently lovin life a hell of a lot more there than in my chicken coop!
