Well, I guess I am no longer raising standard cochins.  As I was closing up we found BigBoy dead.  He was fine just after 6pm when I fed everyone supper.  He was walking up through the yard to see what Ruby was fussing about.  At 7:15 he was just laying in the grass dead.  He was limber and warm.  He had no marks and absolutely no feathers missing.

I have no way to replace him.  I guarentee there isn't a LF Cochin rooster in NC, VA, SC, or TN even near the quality he was.

He has only had a little time around the 4 standard cochin hens on a few days here and there and I hadn't trimmed any butts yet.  Two of the ladies are laying, but I really doupt any are fertile.  I am not even going to try incubating them.
:(

I agree it sucks and your probably right that their not fertile yet and it might piss you off more to try to incubate them and have no results. However will you always wonder what if you tried. That the slim chance it did work their might be some Big Boy blood in there! I would give it a shot dude.

matt so sorry about your roo

i know it may be a long shot, but i think you tried to incubate them you never know one or two may be fertile

I debated it with me, myself, and I long enough. We have decided to keep all eggs for the next 10 days and run them in the Suro. Might as well. Daisy Mama is broody anyways. If any hatch she will be thrilled to raise them.

Good Morning, Happy Chicken People!

Matt, i hope every egg is fertile! Best of luck!

Looks like another rainy morning, but we're supposed to have a sunny weekend! Yay!

Who is going to WCA this weekend? I'm going to haul up a spare tom turkey, a handful of POL RIRs, and a couple POL Welsummers. And bring the rest of the raspberries to deliver. If I can fit all of that in my Element!

Have an awesome day!

Hello NC - Hello Matt,

Although I have had chickens for many years, I am new to BYC and not familiar with the poultry related activities that go on. So, what is WCA?

Thanks, Tin Chicken

I have tons of duck eggs if you want some. I can't eat them, and hubby and kids don't eat a lot of them, so I'm having to get rid of my surplus. Maybe if you tell the ducks you'll get duck eggs elsewhere they'll get jealous and start laying!

Thank you SO much for the offer, but due to my daughter's severe allergies, we have our ducks and chickens on a special "diet" - they are not allowed ANY soy and pretty soon we are going to have to limit the corn in their feed (I guess I just need to start making my own. GRR) because she is developing a sensitivity to corn. I really do appreciate the offer though, and wish I could...then again, maybe MY waistline will thank me for NOT getting any, because I would be baking up a storm with those eggs!!

I still may have to use that threat...that or "I'll send you to the glue factory" threat...does that work on ducks or only horses and cows?? LOL
I am SURE those ducks are laying. Mine are, Alex's are and they are all the same age. They are just hiding them from you.
I volunteer YOUR kids to come scope the place out so they can find them for me.

I suppose this weekend since we are going to be clearing up some of the brush, we can sneak a peak around, but honestly they are in 1 of 3 places ALWAYS: under the deck, in the feeding area or ON the deck looking into the kitchen window - talking to me telling me it's time for their snack!!
wink.png
The deck area is clean - well, perhaps clear would be a better word...its poopy under there...lol, no eggs in the coop that resemble a duck egg, not sure where else to look. BOO
No Fair

my aren't lay yet and they are in a huge pen with nest so I know they aren't hiding them
sad.png
I don't have them locked up, but I still can't seem to think they are laying...I sure wish they would ANNOUNCE it like my chickens do!! LOL
C S B's are also laying ( what do you with a double or tripple yolked duck egg?) That hen is real good at pulling grass/straw or what ever over the egg, has even went so far as to dig about a 3' hole and pull straw over it!
th.gif
Now when I feed them I have to look for any moved about dirt/grass/straw, That duck will NOT lay in the same spot 2 times in a row

<sigh> Now I am just jealous of all of you!! I am going to just HOPE I go out one morning to a "missing" duck and find her "perched" atop a HUGE pile of ducklings then...or eggs...either would suffice!!

x2 So sorry to hear of your loss Matt...I know Cochins are a special breed - mine were near and dear to my heart!!

I don't know about you all, but I am ready for SPRING and WARMER weather. I'd really REALLY like to open up the house to 70 degree weather and NOT have to put on boots just to walk in the yard!!
On a funny duck note: Cadbury was bathing in a mud puddle yesterday despite the fact that just 2 feet away from him, he had a nice BIG pool to play in...nope, it was a mud bath for him. LOL.
Have a GREAT Friday everyone!!

I'm sorry about BigBoy. You know best, all I can think is, incubate his eggs!

Hi Tin Chicken! Welcome to BYC!
WCA is the Wicked Chicken Auction every Sunday in Wilson's Mill. One corner turns into a social event for BYCers. If you're close enough, come check it out when you can!
