I don't know anything about egg binding/breaking, but as far as antibiotics (recently whole flock picked up something respiratory from adult birds I brought in) I had the best results with Tylan 50 injections. I did 1 CC injection to the breast, they sell both the medicine and syringes at feed stores. But that may be a high antibiotic for an egg stuck?

I had no luck with Duramycin, either the 10 soluble or the injectible.

If you do injections, stick with the breast. I didn't think I could get a clear shot at the breast since my chicken was losing weight so I put it in her thigh and must have nicked a nerve because she hobbled around for a week.

Try googling about egg binding or typing it in the search here, sorry I can't be more helpful on that.
Best of luck to you, sending chicken prayers your way :)

Keep us updated!
Thanks for the prayers. My chickens are my pets also. Sorry to read about your troubles. I went thru that last year. I ordered 9 chicks from a hatchery and lost all 6 of my Belgian D'Anvers, one at 5 days old one at 7 days old so the first thing I said to myself, what about the other 4? Sure enough lost 3rd and 4th at 3 months old lost one at 4 months old and the last one at 6months old. Not sure what they had. Too late to send the 3 months old to Raleigh, waiting to hear from the Agricultral agent to tell me what to do. Because I live so far, I have to mail mine, have to have them within 24 hrs. The 4 month old died on a Friday so the guy at the lab said he couldn't be sure she would get there before they left for the day only work a half of day on Sat. and the last one died the day after Christmas so I figured nobody there being it was during the holiday. One of the Belgians was a crossbeak and the EE bantams I ordered, are standards. They refund me for those four and the 2 day olds they will replace with standards if I order again. So have to watch hatchery chicks to. Hope I can save this one she is pretty weak.

It was me, I was planning on making it out there, then the hubby called with a "honey do" list. I thought "honey do list" were supposed to go the other way around.....

Thanks for the info though

DISINFECTANT QUESTION:

I've got my bleach in a spray bottle, and was going to spray down the outdoor roost and the pallets used for the fence. Do I then wash it off, leave it on, use another type of cleaner? I was going to soak the feeder and waterer (the hanging ones you get at TSC) in bleach and scrap the chicken wire.
Coop: I am going to build another one, but I think I will try to clean out the chick coop.
Also, do I do anything to the land?
Anything I'm forgetting?

Thanks!

hey yall i hope yall had a good saturday i did i sold 7 chickens 3 of which were roos lol and almost bought some frizzled pigeons its a good think someone bought them before i could get over there and with that money i am buying more chickens tomorrow i jsut hope i break even

Please don't shoot the messenger...... NH you should be feeding 30 somewhat birds at LEAST 150 of feed a month.

This is a good reason for your poor egg production. Also why why your birds leaving the property...they are hungry !

Mine would be leaving too if they only got 50lbs a month! Even free ranging they need enough "grain" for nutritional needs and laying. I know the feed you need is expensive but they are hungry.

Are you sure you don't want the name and number of the feed mill that offered to make you soy free feed for around $11/bag?

I'm going to make it x3. Free-ranging is a supplement, not the other way around. My birds usually fill up at the feeders in the morning, spend the day ranging, and top off with feed again so they go to bed with a full crop. In summer they reduce their feed intake by nearly fifty percent, but I still go through a lot of feed. In winter there's really not much out there. Insects are dormant, mostly. Nothing is growing. Maybe in Florida, but not here. And they burn more trying to free-range than they get from it. But they prefer being out, and that makes it worth it to me.

Alex, I'd like that contact if you don't mind. Being able to offer soy-free eggs might be a plus. Still not sure if my market could use that, but I'll find out!

And I'm back immediately to edit, as it looks like a gang-up...but it's not meant to be. It's support for what Beth was brave enough to say. I'll never be known for tact, but no animosity was in any of these posts. Just trying to be helpful, and support Beth for saying something very hard to say.

Do you feed them on a schedule or just give them access to it all the time?
I always had one of the hanging feeders filled with grain feed then they would eat grass and bugs all day.
I don't know how many pounds each bird would go through a month, but I felt like I was always running out to get more feed.
I've heard of some people only letting their birds free range.

I keep trying to get a photo of my Rosecomb Brown Leghorn cockerel. He's fast, and they all come out blurry. This is as good as it gets. This is Little Big Man

The first litter of bunnies has abandoned their nestbox. This is the NZ x Cali litter. The babies are starting to get smut faces and tails. So cute! Later they'll be tasty, but right now they're cute. :D

My newly planted gooseberries have fruit, too! That picture is too blurry to see anything. Maybe tomorrow.....

X 100..
I am just trying to be helpful. You wonder about egg production and now your birds are straying. Then you make mention of feeding 50 lbs every 2 months. it then occurs to me that may be your problem.
I am just sending you a link with info on proper feeding. You need to leave free feed. I know I have a lot more birds then you, I am proud to say I am within the 100 mark.. I think 110 or something. I feed 50 lbs of feed a DAY !!!!
Growing birds eat twice as much as adults.. IMO. Like a pack of hungry teenagers. (which in fact they are LOL )

Please don't be upset at me... or anyone for that matter. We are all here to support one another..teach one other.
