Actually there are only 8 legs. The front 2 are pedipalps. These are part of the mouth and can contain sexual organs in the male for transferring sperm. Pedipalps in trapdoors are so long that they appear to be an extra sets of legs.

Thanks! I got the video and thought that was the case.

Hey Ruthann, maybe the spider was trying to MATE with the stick!

Here it is just did this one. Got Corid on order. Will get it Wed. or Thurs. With working and Fathers Day, this was as soon as I could do. Anything I can give her until then?

I would get some Corid at Tractor Supply. They carry it and you could get it started tomorrow. I would do it as soon as you can. It can really pull a chick down quickly if not treated. I watched a vet school video on it and by the 5th day of non-treatment, the poor chick died. Hopefully, your chick won't have as bad a time if it is already several months old. The blood is from the lining of their intestines being shed out due to the coccidia overload and the damage they cause to the intestinal lining, from what I understand.....

Random question: does anyone here grow watermelon or cantaloupe? I am growing both, followed the planting instructions whenni transplanted them... and they are intermingled and together they are attempting to take over my entire garden....
How do I comtain them?
Is it ok that they have now grown together?
they have even grown outinto the yard...
ahh!
We are getting ready to go away and I am afraid I will come back and they will be ALL OVER!

Maybe your hubby was trying to induce labor by showing you the video!

Hehe...we are growing watermelon, cantaloupe and pumpkins for the first time this year and even though we followed the spacing instructions, our pumpkin vines are HUGE and encroaching on our watermelons (which are in another raised bed), our watermelons are spreading ALL over the place and some of the "baby" vines have "merged" with the pumpkins (I tell myself they are holding hands...LOL). I don't know ANYTHING about growing them, so I can't really help you, but I wanted you to know the same thing is happening to us over here. I'll say an extra prayer that you just get a bountiful harvest from them all!!

Watermelon....music to this woman's ears!! LOL

Good Morning, Happy Chicken People!

High adventure at Hollow Oak Farm this morning! I went out to feed as usually. Cows first. Juvenile Detention Center and grow-out next. Then the rabbit house, then the layer house. Today, since there are birds belonging to Susan in extra cages in the rabbit house, I came back to do them last. While I was in there, I heard the most gawdawful cow noise I have ever heard, followed by large clunking sounds. I went back to look in the cow pasture, and one of the calves had decided he wanted different hay. Turkey nest box hay. He could have stuck his head in the front door. He could have, but he didn't. No, he chose the small side door used for gathering eggs. It was just big enough for his head. But when he went to pull his head out, his horn buds got caught. He pulled that box twenty feet, and ended up down on his knees with his head twisted under it. I got out there and grabbed the box and tried rolling it up. Before I could get it quite high enough, he tried to pull out, and after the fight ended up down with his head all twisted around. I tried again, and the same thing happened, except this time I went down, too.

Then I remembered I had company! I called Susan and she came running out. First, she got me back on my feet. Then together we rolled the box far enough that Ranger could pull his stupid cow head out. I got a bit more feed to get him to come where I could get a good look at him. He's got some cuts. Not bad, but I don't need fly strike. I tried getting BluKote on him. Got some, and he had a fit. I'll get the rest at feeding time tomorrow.

Thank goodness Susan was here! If I hadn't gone back out there to do her birds, I might not have found him until tonight. And if she wasn't here, I'm not sure who I would have called for help.

Fun morning, indeed!

Good morning folks

Any vine type plant like squashes and watermelon will grow
like they are from Jack and the Beanstalk but along the ground.
try the bush varieties next time......you get a little less fruits but
they should not vine out so far or you could try training your
vine varieties onto heavy woven wire fencing. I don't like that
method as well because if the fruit gets REALLY big it breaks
the vines but it works for the smaller squash varieties.

hope everyone has a good day

Yeah, they will spread OUT. LOL.... When the melons start growing, make sure they are either on sand or straw (pine or wheat) or the bottoms will rot before they ripen. It doesn't matter if the are intermingled, but it will make it harder to harvest

Oh what an adventure... Glad you aren't hurt! So sorry for Ranger. I am sure it was not funny at the time, but now that we know he is not hurt any more than scratches, I would love to see a picture of a calf with a nest box on it's neck

Will heat give chickens loose stool or even diarrhea? I dont see it all the time but the other day when it was so dang hot I did. They do have access to plenty of fresh water.
