My rooster Americana. Still debating on if I want to keep him.

"Big Girl" Australorp. She is the biggest out of all my birds.

Another EE. Wondering if it might be a roo. No crowing, but the tail feathers are interesting, and the bird is the largest of the Americanas.

Gandalf, hehe.

Another pic of the questionable EE. Not sure if roo or not.

Another shot of Gandalf. The chicken just looks funny.

They aren't "free roaming" yet. We've expanded the pen into the garden area so they can get at all of the grass(they eat about as much as our cows). Probably going to start letting them roam this weekend.

A RIR. All 3 of pretty laid back considering we haven't given them as much attention since we got'em.

My fav. "Godzilla". 2.5 month old Jersey Giant. She is bigger than her sisters and quite docile. Almost rivaling (in plummage at least) the older birds.

I did a mass butchering last night cuz we had too many young roos. But I must say 4 month old birds are much more tasty than waiting a few years for them to stop laying. All is well here, baby had a doc appt today and is at almost 10 lbs.....That's like 2 lbs in 4 weeks! The birds are enjoying their new "fresh" watering system, as well as I am....don't have to ever fill up jugs anymore!!!!

Well, my 1 year old RIR roo decided to go after my niece... The OD went to her defense and the roo has a fractured leg... Any one have a good method to splint the leg? Its broken in the "drumstick area" just above the knee... Really hoping I don't have to put him down... This one is the OD's favorite...

An effective splint has to stabilize the joints on either side of the break. In this case, that includes the hip. Likely you'd have to keep the whole bird immobile for the six weeks that'll take to heal. And no guarantees. Bummer that it's a favorite bird...

Edited to add....OD?

I am reminded by the presence of 16 Chief that I have blackberries starting where they are not welcome. I know Beth wants some. Anyone else? These are commercial types that produce large berries. But here's the catch....you have to dig them yourself! (And fill the holes back in, but we'll supply the soil.). I can't dig, and hubby would just as soon mow them back. Chief, you're close. Want any?

I wish I had time this week to come down they look delicious!!!! I've had no luck growing berries.

Haha I agree the price is insane, but it's the only place I've found that gaurantees the sex since they DNA test. I get super attached to my chickens I can't raise a baby for 6 months to find out it's a boy, I'd be heartbroken to give him away. I don't think I could eat a silkie, they're super cute and their bones and skin are black!!!

Thanks Hollow... I've been out of action since April (ruptured my Achilles turkey hunting)... Will try to get by there this weekend... Will call before heading that way... Hopefully between my paramedic skills and the wife's OR nurse skills and some blessings from on high, Everything will work out... Really like this rooster except he wants to try to show that he's the boss every now and then...

Chief, since you are damaged, I might be able to get hubby to help dig. ;) I'll be gone part of Saturday...but not sure what part yet. And Sunday I have to drive to Georgia, but if you want to come way early so you have time to get back and ready for church, that would work. Or other days. I'm unscheduled for the summer, and am only going to work when I want to!

I'm back in regular stomping attire... still doing rehab but a lot better... just hadn't been able to make it back your way yet... will be next week one day probably before I can get by there... Thanks again...
