Good morning everyone! I some sun this morning until I got to work. If I don't mow my yard soon I'm going to need a bush hog.

Moomoo, those are the meat type, makes a great meal but doesn't sell for much money. And they don't breed true either, hence their name cornish rock cross. But I have found that if you cross them (if they live long enough to reproduce) with a big breed bird (I used buff orps) the offspring tends to be a big bird that grows faster than the other breed but not as fast as the meaties.

here is a picture off of google of a white pure breed cornish (cornish can come in alot of colors but have the same shape and type of comb) The meaties that you have only come in LF, while the pure breed cornish come in bantam or LF

ok picture is not working

but you can google cornish, google dark cornish as this gives you what to look for in the white cornish

I have finally had a chance to get some pics of the chicken housing that my DH has so diligently worked on for me. I am so thankful that he is able to build like this. I help as I can but he has done all of it himself and sometimes with a friend of ours. I just love the sand because it makes it SOO much easier to keep clean and and thus, minimize the nasty flies. I've still got a few things I'm tinkering with but so far, it is working well. The baby area allows the younger chicks to play and try their wings without being bossed around by the older hens. When there are no babies, I just leave the door open and the hens will lay eggs in those nest boxes. This (above) is in the big run area looking into the baby area. Baby area with nest boxes for later. Other side of baby area with cages for youngest ones. West half of the larger run/roost area. Rooster living quarters and guineas at night. You cant really see the 3 separate rooster pens in there, but there are 3 and then where you see the guinea is a large open area for them to go at night. The roosters get that area during the day. Today, I attached several 10' dog run panels to the outside of the rooster area so they can go outside in the grass if they want. It also gives me another place to put the ones who decide to act mean! Hopefully, I can find someone to take the 10 roosters I don't need and there will be a lot less rooster drama....ugh! Too bad there isn't a way to get all the hatching eggs to be hens..... Happy 4th!
This is incrediable!!!!

Aww, thank you! If I don't sell some roosters soon, I will need to expand again! I've advertised them on all the Facebook groups I can find and on Craigslist. I had to turn one fellow down because he said they would eat the ones his wife didn't like. My son saw the email and freaked out (they are pets to him), so I will continue to feed them and hope for some pet/breeding homes to come along....they are all beautiful, healthy cockerels.

I also love that you have a place for your guineas... I really want some but I am afraid they would not coexist with the chickens very well.... maybe next spring : )

Hello everyone! The egg mystery has begun again. I had two days of finding 5 eggs but now I am back to one or two eggs... I guess the rest are getting buried under the litter... I have eggs (some fake and some real) in every nesting box but does not seem to be working. Any other suggestions?

My roosters are still tolerating each other although Big Momma does push Mr Momma around. Mr. Momma jumps the gate and spends a good portion of the day outside the run, I believe as a way to have some time where he does not have to worry about Big Momma pushing him around. But my chicks for Mr. Momma are growing fast and hopefully in another month I can start having them spend some time together.

What is the best way to move chickens from one coop to another? Once the chicks get big enough all the chickens will move into the chicks coop. Need some suggestions on how to make this transition?

Hope everyone has a great and DRY day!

Where in Craven are you? lots of the little garden stores carry feed. I live in Havelock and the small towns on either side of us have feed, Williams Nursery in James City or Newport Garden in Newport.

Good Late Morning everyone!
I have YET ANOTHER broody!! We classified our second broody as "Maizey" from Dr. Seuss as she wants to sit on the eggs, yet she isn't sitting on the eggs!

We have one of our grey Marans (I think) who has been faithfully sitting for the past 2 days NOT moving off....so we will switch the girls out (as well as the eggs)...bummer what a waste of a dozen eggs. Oh well.
Baby...still there! BOO. Had a great time berry picking with my hubby and girls, but sadly that did NOT induce labor. LOL. DH decided since all of our trees died, he wants to plant blue/black/red berries in their stead just like he saw at Vollmer Farms!! LOL.
Have a great day everyone...keeping my fingers crossed for a DRY weekend for everyone!!
