Hello fellow NCers! I have a 2-3 month old Black Cooper Marans cockerel that I cannot keepAnyone want to give him a home? If so, please message me. He is from Ravencroft Rookery in Hillsborough. I am in Fayetteville.
Thanks everyone for the positive thoughts!
$311.28 at seventy first vet clinic to tell me they don't know what's wrong! They want me to bring him back again tomorrow for some fluids and a steroids shot.
He's in really bad shape, I feel so bad.
Now the REALLY bad part of my day-- I come home from the vet and when I pull in my driveway I hear a commotion in my backyard. I go out back and everyone (my animals not people) are screaming. It takes me a moment to realize there is a hawk INSIDE my chicken pen (which has bird netting over the top). I open the door to go in and the stupid hawk comes at me, panicked it can't get out. Then it goes up against the fence and flies out, which is when I noticed a couple of the staples holding the netting in against the fence came off. I don't know if it was the hawk pulling (pushing, sitting....) or the storms we had loosening it up. ;But either way, it was smart enough to find a tiny hole and go in! We live in the city, and a couple times I have seen a hawk fly by, but this is the first time I've ever seen one IN my yard. My husband is mad I didn't grab a gun and shoot it, but we live IN the city, you can't just be shooting hawks, and the whole thing happened so fast.
Some of my birds were able to hide, but the ones that the hawk got were ripped apart. One all I found was a spine, another was just bits of organs. Three were still alive, but had their guts hanging out I had my husband put them out of their misery. Four of my chicks made it-- unfortunately it was both Marans which I think are roo's, and the 2 lav orps I couldn't tell what they were. Most of the babies killed were turkeys. Which I guess we were just going to eat anyway, but it was still pretty horrible.
Positive part of my day-- the turkey poults came!!! And they are SO ridiculously cute! The general consensus I've been given is they're mean and stupid, but they are the sweetest things ever! They have way more personality than any chicks I've had and follow me all over begging to be held. They're really active (and noisy) and love running around and being snuggled. This is going to be a mess, I will never be able to eat them. Are heritage breeds just as personable? I'm ready to give up the chickens and have turkeys!
I hope everyone is doing well. I just signed on and there's like 30 posts I have to catch up on, just needed to vent a little first!
