I have seen ads for lavender orpingtons, their actually not that hard to find anymore. Someone just posted for a few days old to a month old lavender orpington chicks for $5 a piece on Craig's list, in this area. Don't know if this helps you or not. I thought you were gonna keep a lavender orpington hen?

Wild, being that the cross beak has started at such a young age, it probably wont make it. But I would fight as long as it was willing to fight, if it were my bird. Read through "Diary of a cross beak" its got lots of great information in it and different types of feeds used on these guys. If it lives long enough it will learn how to judge better with just the one eye. Good luck.

Thanks RF heading off to read.

I sell my blue/lav orps for 75$ a trio at 5 months old. but I'm way out in WNC. it'll depend on the market and what someone is willing to pay, quality counts as well. I say list them at the price you want and then add OBO.

Thanks.

And I am keeping a hen-- I have 3 hens and a rooster, I only want one.

They're just about 3 months old now, I was thinking about keeping them until laying age and selling as a trio.

Stupid hawk!
Fortunately I haven't seen him around lately, but don't want to get too comfortable!
My bird netting over the run is getting covered in pine needles it's almost impossible to keep it clean!

I still have 4 left from that. And the one with her side ripped up healed up well with the neosporin, can't even tell. Her name is Estelle, she's the one I'm keeping.

I also still have 2 Blue Copper Marans I'm pretty sure are boys if anyone's looking....

Most my damage was to the turkeys, the hawk ripped them to shreds. Later I heard they like white birds better so maybe that's why?

Where are you guys finding these lavender orpingtons on craigslist??? I just did a search and all I can find are an older pair (1 roo 1 hen) for $50 in raleigh....
I was thinking $50 for a 6 month old trio originally, but didn't know the going rate.
I see laying birds on there all the time for $15-$20 a piece for standard breeds so $50 didn't see unreasonable to me...

I am still looking for a Cream Legbar and my dream chicken ayam cemani!

Oh I have another question I've been meaning to ask....

Does anyone know what causes blood rings in eggs?
I wasn't sure if there was a way they could be prevented during incubation?

I have blue marans in my incubator (for the THIRD time, if I don't get a pullet this time I quit!!!)
I have always used an LED flashlight for candling, but these were really dark so I ordered one of those $20 farm innovations plug in candlers, which was a complete waste of money it's more worthless than the flashlight.

3 of my eggs had blood rings in them. I took them out and opened them. Didn't look like much development going on (couldn't see a chick or anything just yolk and a little red).
Just wasn't sure if there was anything I could do to prevent it.

So this morning I was moving three of my hens out to a tractor for the day when I noticed one of them seems to have raspy breathing. I didn't hear it until I picked her up. She sounds (or I guess feels) like a child that needs to cough and spit something out. I don't know if it's new because this is the first time I've held her. She's POL and my most verbal hen so far.

She's eating and drinking and active just raspy. What do you think she has?

Does she have any other symptoms?
She could have something stuck in her crop?
I had some sick birds awhile back and it started with a raspy-ness and it turned into runny noses and what I think was infectious coryza, and in the end they all got it and had to be put down :(
If you can, I would separate her until you know what you're looking at and give her some tylan, just as a precaution.
Though I may be prone to over-reacting...

What breed is she, she is very pretty!!!
