I tried rye grass once. I spread a bit of dirt in the bottom of a planting tray and kept it watered. (not sure this was the right way to do this stuff) My chickens were not very interested in it. Maybe the rye grass was not to their liking, because the love regular grass, weeds clover. does anyone know if it is possible to sprout countryside organic seed, which contains, lots of whole grains? It seems the bits that get flung out of the coop tend to sprout out of the ground on their own.
Got my first MW turkey egg today. I found it in the silkie coop and I was really disturbed at first, thinking that one of my poor little silkies had popped out that enormous egg. Then I realized who's egg it was and I popped it directly into the incubator.
How does everyone winterize there coops? This is my first winter and I was told I don't need to worry about it. I did naturally, I put up plastic on the outside of the coop facing the North where the wind really picks up. Did I go overboard?

From what I've read the dirt isn't necessary. Seems most folks that grow fodder do so hydroponically. Maybe it's a seasonal issue but I'm having a heck of a time locating untreated seeds to use. I've got some BOSS going now, but would like to do barley, wheat, millet or pretty much any grain. Can't even find rye grass seed.
Does it really matter all that much if it's treated? With all the rinsing and soaking and whatnot you'd think the stuff would wash off. Esp. since I'm not re-using the same water.
