North Carolina

Lol lived in cc all my life. Graduated from La Plata in91. Moved here from St Charles. Wish i would of done it 20 years ago! And we have only been here since August.

Thanks!
The others I've seen weren't so tall/slender, guess this one is better quality? I've only ever seen bantams too, which is why I've never really taken an interest, didn't know they came in full size.
Pretty unique looking....

Where did you grow up? I am from the western side, in the rainforest right on the Oregon WA border. You won't find a more beautiful place. But it is to rainy for me. The "town" I grew up in gets an average of 88 inches of rain a year. My husband would love it but I have warned him that I will kill him if we move to an area that is too grey.

I grew up all over the Westernmost West Coast! Was born in Portland and bounced around tiny towns that didn't warrant a dot on a map mostly. Unless you're into rodeos.... I did live in Galt, OR, Ione, OR, Pendleton, OR, St. Paul, OR and Bend and Eugene for spurts. Also lived in Ione, CA and spent most of my summers in Coos Bay/North Bend, OR. Moved to Seattle from Ione, CA when I was 13 and stayed there until 2001 when I hopped on a train with my son and $50 to my name and never looked back. Lived in Columbia, SC from 2001 until this year. I do miss Oregon and have often toyed with the idea of going back but between the expense of living there and the copious amounts of grey (we probably get more actual rainfall here than we ever did there - they just drag it out more) I just can't make myself do it. From the moment we unpacked our first box here in NC DH and I knew we were "home". We probably have one more move in the next 5-10 years but it will be to our "final destination" and it will be within an hour of where we are currently. Wherever we can obtain a good 50 acres +/- that we can farm. I would like to be a little closer to mountains... or what passes for mountains on this coast.

Most are small and don't have much because the prices aren't good (from a sellers point) when they just start out. Most won't last long due to this, but a few have and they grow in number of animals and prices tend to go up. Time of year, type/breed/gender of animal, and who's there always plays a part in the price of stuff. I know there is "flippin chicken" near the coast, but don't know of any others down by the coast. There's a few over in the middle of the state, but WCA seems to be the biggest for the moment. I hope some others pick up as alot seems to be going on at WCA.
There is an auction in Broadway (south of Sanford) that does pretty well. I would guess they had at least 100 boxes a couple of weeks ago wen I was there. The chickens I took sold fairly well, cockerels went for $5 - $9. If you wanted a deal on a rabbit you could have had your pick for $2 - $5, glad I wasn't selling rabbits!

OHHHHHH Where did you get those gloves?? Im a BC survivor.....I NEED those..lolol
Kristan - Congratulations!

In your own opinions....what breeds are cold hardy and lays well thru the whole year?
I have had a couple of hens that were supposed to be RIR, but by the looks of them I am pretty sure they were crossed with game hens. They laid really well all year round.

I never thought I would say this, but I love my leghorn girls! They are small so they don't eat as much as some of the bigger breeds and they lay HUGE eggs. These girls are not quite a year old, so I don't know how they will do next winter, but from the 6 hens I consistently get 5 - 6 eggs a week and many days there is a double yolker in there. I no longer care that the eggs aren't brown or blue. White is just fine!

Modern Game, most just call them moderns. Come in bantam(very common) and standards. That specific variety is Black Breasted Red.

Matt
They look like slender super models to me!

The town I am from is right on the Columbia, between Vancouver and the coast. On a good day the population is about 400. The closest town of any size is Longview WA which is where my family still lives.
Wow, you were brave to just up and move with a son and $50. I don't think I could do that! Obviously it all worked out

I like it here, but the summers just kill us. We hybernate indoors until the humidity and temperature drop. We want to be somewhere that we can be outdoors more than not. One of the reasons we are looking at the area in WA is because of the cost of living. It is nothing like the west side and comparable to here. Land might even be cheaper.

Thanks!

Games come in a wide variety. Moderns are the really tall, slender "roadrunners" of the group. Unfortunately the picture is not showing the whole bird. The rooster you posted is missing his comb and wattles, for showing reasons games are dubbed. Dubbing is the removal of the ear lobes, wattles, and comb and is done close to a year of age.

Yes, I know of the barnyard auction. Been there when it was starting out, and was not happy to see them using a bait bidder to bid up the price of things. But I have not been back to see how things are now. I have thought of it, but it happens on Friday night, and that's coffee night which I can't give up!

well all this talk of moving.... I am pretty much stuck here to my roots my great grandpa bought these 200 acres in 1934 for 4600$ and worked his butt off for years getting this place to where it is I intend on keeping up his dream, through the state takin their 'share' for the bypass and family members trying to sell of land for new construction homes
