Yes, I know of the barnyard auction. Been there when it was starting out, and was not happy to see them using a bait bidder to bid up the price of things. But I have not been back to see how things are now. I have thought of it, but it happens on Friday night, and that's coffee night which I can't give up!
Bait Bidder... I have never thougt of that... I need to pay more attention to who is bidding!

??? About leaving my chickens here? At one point, he told me I'd have to get rid of them before we sold because no one will buy a house with chickens running around. ...

Our chickens are in a run most of the day. I usually let them out an hour or two when I get home. Except this time of year, because I am usually getting home as it is time for them to roost.

I miss interacting with them every day.

Hollow-- Thanks so much for the help!!!
I was thinking a set up similar to the chickens?
I don't know?
Freezing them at winter is a good idea, after this batch I will have to redo it that way.

Eggs were being sold in insane quantities (100!!!) so I don't even know that they will all fit in my incubator. If they do and I get a 50% hatch rate that's still 50!
A friend of mine keeps chickens/turkeys I'm sure she will take some off my hands.

With proper set up, what's a good number to keep? I want them for eggs & meat...
Uhhh, DB, have you seen the size of a quail egg? They are tiny. I imagine you could eat the eggs, but that is a lot of cracking. The quail themselves are tiny also. I think a typical adult serving is two birds. Here is a blog that compares a quail, pheasant and chicken egg. http://gracewoodunited.blogspot.com/2010/05/quail-eggs.html

Yeah I know they're tiny, but the amount of food they eat vs the amount they produce compared to a chicken is supposed to be more efficient.
I've never eaten quail, but I'm hearing the taste is much better than chicken...
I guess I will see!
The adult portion you're supposed to eat for meat is 3-4oz but I know the average person eats more than that.
Thanks for the link

The quail are the least efficient animals I raise. They need higher protein feed, which is more expensive, and they waste a lot. They can't forage for any of their feed, so everything has to be delivered. While tasty, the feed to meat ratio is pretty poor.

On the other hand, the eggs are great hard boiled, but using them fresh/raw is a pain because the membrane is so thick. I've ended up squirting them trying to get them open. And with thick tough membrane and fragile shells, it's easy to get shells in everything.

I kept three quints for eggs. And then raised a lot of young ones for meat. We'll keep doing it while we can afford to raise them, but the tiniest financial squeeze and they are the first to go!

I don't think anything can be as inefficient as these stupid broad breasted turkeys we got!!!! I can't wait for them to go, they're blowing through $25/week in feed for the 5 of them and I really don't think they will weigh all that much once dressed out.

I'm looking on here and google for some pen ideas. I really want them to have access to grass versus a cage. We will see what I can come up with/build in the next few weeks.

I'm thinking about putting them in my original pre-fab coop/run once they're out of the brooder, but trying to figure out how many it will comfortably hold until processing. Then I'll just keep some girls for those cute little eggs

I don't have a run. Wanted one initially but now they've gone so long without one I don't think they'd do well in one. We're still trying to find the balance with the dogs.

Good morning folks

Good morning!!!

What is up with this weather??!!?? 80 today then 40 on Sunday. I'm grateful for the 80 degree days in December though, if I had my way it'd be like that all year round!

Sorry to bombard ya'll with quail questions, but this is my last one. I asked it on a quail pen forum the other day, but never got a response, so since you guys have all been so active lately I'm hoping someone can give me a little insight....

This was my first pen I got when I originally bought chicks, it's one of those pre-fab ones. I used it for like 2 or 3 months than built something else because I felt like it was way too small for chickens, they needed a big run. Since then it's just been behind the shed. How many quail do you think I could raise in here comfortably to the age of laying (which means they'd probably only been in there like a month or so?). At that time I plan on keeping some favs for laying and processing the rest. The photo makes it look really tall, but it's not.

The part on the bottom that's open is like 2.5' by 5' long then the upstairs has like a 2.5'x2.5' area with some roosts then a couple nesting boxes off the back.....

Quail should be in a hutch type cage....like a rabbit. NOT on the ground. IMO !!!!
