Hope everyone starts feeling better! I can't wait for it to warm up this weekend I've had enough cold.

Ya'll are making me want a Serama now they're so pretty! But I have too many already, I need a farm! If anyone is looking for birds, I just posted some. I really need to downsize now that the chicks are growing out.

Hey guys, is there anything I can do about a chicken that won't lay in the nest box???
And it's not even like she has a little hiding spot where she always lay, she'll literally be walking around the yard, squat down and let the egg fall out, then keep on walking.
I've only gotten 6 eggs from her over the past month, but each of them have been just laying out in the middle of my backyard in random spots.
I only have 2 others that are laying right now and they will only use the nest box.
I've tried picking the other up & sticking her in there, but she just runs right out.

A lot of chicken people on here advise to put her back into the coop for a while....maybe 2 weeks...to see if she will get acclimated with the laying box again...She may have such a weak vent that she doesn't realize that the time is so near.!! Let's see what others have to say. I may be completely off base with this.

Okay, thank you so much for the advice! I've had chickens hide their eggs before, but never just leave them out like that. My nesting box isn't in my coop, but it is in the run, it's a separate hutch type thing. The coop is just like a 6'x6' shed with a door, dirt floor & roosts. I can try to keep her closed in the run, though she may just leave the eggs laying around on the ground in there, the run is pretty big. I guess on the fun side the kids get to go on an egg hunt looking for them!

I'm just afraid I'm missing some since I've only found 6 and I hate eggs being wasted.

She may certainly rebel and not use the next box but I might try it and see...That way, when you find an egg..you know how old it is. Are you in a position to check the nests often? If so, I would let her out when I find an egg. You know she's not going to lay another one that day..Otherwise...LOLOL....your kids get to go egg hunting everyday when they get in from school!!

Someone on the serama thread was praising your chicks and babies she had gotten from you! do you have a website? I would love to look more into your seramas!

right now I don't relly have too much room in my coop, but I would love to see your birds!

Here is my classified, with some pictures. I have over 30 of the little buggers. I have a decent size waiting list for eggs and did not ship at all this week, so even further behind.
They are adorable little birds..good layers of tiny eggs and great broody mamas.

I'm guessing its 32 degree Fahrenheit and under. That's when water freezes. You probably have too much moisture inside the coop, probably too many birds and not enough ventilation. The roof needs some sort of gap to allow moist air out. Poop also makes a lot of moisture, add some cardboard or straw to the floor so it can absorb the water from the poop.
