Good morning folks

Why is it that just about this time each year we get an urge
to start planting or at least planning a garden? Lord knows
that if we put anything out yet that it's a guarantee of a hard
frost that will have us ranting and pulling hair. I am determined
to get some peas in this year.......missed them last year.

hope everyone has a good day

Agreed CSB!
I am so anxcious to get out there, maybe wishful thinking for warmth!
Whoever was calling for snow better be wrong that's the last thing I want haha!
Thanks for all the gardening tips, I guess I should have started working the ground earlier. Oh well, I have next year.
I had read to make compost you have to mix the green & the brown so the chicken poo with pine shavings. I've been composting for months & it still looks exactly like I did when I put it in there!
I think this year I'll have to buy some compost along with the little I have & try to build it up, then do it all over again in the winter.
This has been tough for me since the land is so different here then where I came from. You could pretty much pull up some grass, throw down some seeds, & anything would grow!

Hope everyone has a great day! All week they've been calling for mid 60's tomorrow, I just saw they downgraded it to high of 49

Dutchbunny, wood chips decompose slowly. Grass clippings go much faster, and leaves aren't too far behind. I'd put wood chips into a compost pile that's going to be able to sit for a year or two.

Cold crops start going in next weekend! And herbs are starting on my kitchen windowsill. Lots of stuff for the bunnies, too. Time to plant!

Lasagna style raised beds is supposed to be good for your situation too. http://redhillgardening.blogspot.com/2012/04/what-is-lasagna-gardening.html

Also, a spinning type compost bin is supposed to help speed decomp of the material as well. http://www.popularmechanics.com/science/environment/waste/4234559?src=soc_fcbks

Last but not least - never underestimate the power of worms in your compost. Not only do they help with decomposition - they make tasty treats for the chickens too. :)

Good luck!! Look at it this way, even if you don't have a stellar garden as far as edibles go at least you're providing green manure for next years garden and the chickens will love munching on the plant "waste" as well.

I'm so envious of all you folks making your garden plans. I can't do anything here for months, except daydream over seed catalogs, and turn the compost.( the chickens are practically doing that for me) My beds are frozen solid. We won't be officially frost-free until Mother's Day. I really want to build a greenhouse. I won't start my seeds indoors until mid-late March.

Chris is going to start the first new chickenhouse tomorrow, I think. He's picking up a round bale of hay today, so can't get lumber until it's unloaded. But then it's game on. New chickenhouses! Woohoo!

Well my rogue broody has hatched 1 chick and two more are pipped.

Maybe she'll be happy and be done for now, but I think one of my silkie projects is trying to go broody now. And of course she is also lose in the yard
