North Carolina

none of these farm stores have it!

i'm so mad

I missed seeing it in tsc. Do u have one of those nearby? It's easy to miss- in the cattle section in a maybe 4 by 4 inch white bag.....
Also try amazoon with 2 day shipping maybe they have it? Or look up the closest tsc I know they carry it.... >hoping u can find it quick<

Good morning :) !!!! How's my nc folk doing this morning?
I don't know about I guys but I'm disappointed it looks rainy... Blah. Gotta finish my tractor which I am pretty horrible at building (I'm a newbie and my husband seems to think chickens are "my thing" yay! Lol)

U guys having hatches are so lucky! I got 2 more weeks with my copper marans...

Thanks hollowoakfarm! I am a registered nurse at a hospital but would have been a biology major except there is no job security and u pretty much need ur phd in that...
Nursing satisfies the need to help people I have and so I enjoy it a lot. But I like to play with fruit trees/plants/shrubs/ flowering ornamentals, and gardening a ton.. And about any animal I can stare at for hours and be happy. Hence "biology nerd" ;) if ur ever in the WNC area and ever want any free plants, I love to give away and trade and graft stuff. (Including share eggs and chicks if I ever get an excess)

Nice to see another chicken folk in the mountains! I'm also in healthcare (Rad Tech) and love it. Where in western NC are you?

Just out of curiosity, do you have any experience with apple tree grafting?

We're a biology family...with the exception of hubby. DD works for the Environmental Investigation Agency in DC. DS is about to graduate. I teach at one of the UNC campuses. Today I brought newly hatched baby quail in for my student to oooo and ahhhhh over. Most of them have never seen babies. I'll bring baby rabbits when I have those. Even brought bottle baby lambs in one semester. They had to eat! And I use examples from our farm in class all the time. Shows them the practical side of things.

We'll be out in Boone for Ds graduation next month. What part of WNC are you in?

Beth-- Your muscovies are definitely prettier than any of the others I've seen (most were white or white with another color and just an abundance of caruncles, not all smooth & pretty)

Do you clip yours or have problems with them flying away? I've read a lot of people with backyard Muscovy have said they've found them fly off into neighbor's pools! Also any issues with their claws and kids?

Do you sell hatching eggs for the lavenders (assuming that's what was in the photos you posted, didn't know they existed)?

Yes ..they are Lavender.
The males get a more Cruncles then hens do.They get more as they mature. My hens fly over a 5 ft fence without blinking. My males are heavier and don't / can't lift over....not saying they can't or won't HAHAHa
Claws are damaging, getting smacked with a wing hurts. My children do not carry around any of my birds, they are not toys so therefore they don't get scratched or smacked with a wing. They do feed them by hand and the birds take the treats gently. They are sweet birds and very broody.

I do not bother selling hatching eggs, Muscovy are hard to hatch by incubator. I let the hens do all the work. I have 3 hens sitting now.

Hey, I'm having to figure out the whole "handy" thing on my own too. It's definitely a work in progress. LOL. My hoop house project seems pretty daunting right now.

How do you like nursing? Feel free to send me a PM if you like. I'm considering nursing school and have been touching base with different people in different fields so I can get a good sense before I jump back into school.

Good Morning Everyone!

What a rainy icky morning, I was thinking that a boat might be better transportation to work. It looks like the skies might be clearing and at least the rain knocked down some of the pollen. YAY!

Where, oh where is CSB? I am hoping her absence is just because morning was thrown off by the rain.

FVRM, did you try Southern Gin and Grain, TSC, Family Farm, Bells (not sure if Bells has medications or not)? If you are calling, tell them it is for cows or don't specify. The medication you want is Corid. Good luck.

Have a great day!

I went to the tsc and asked for it but the guy had no clue about any of that stuff, he literally said i probably knew more about it than he did. (he got that right) he led me to the poultry medicine section and they didn't have anything. I didn't think about looking in the cattle section because i figured i couldn't use it on chickens.

I went to a local farm store and the only thing they recommended was oxytetracycline. which I know is an antibacterial and coccidia is a protozoan.(the guy said he had been raising chickens for years and knew it could work for coccidiosis, even though i told him it's a protozoa not bacteria) oh well I'm desperate so i bought it and i hope it does something

but if the chicks pull through I won't be hatching anything else until i get my brooder properly set up and coccidia medications in order.

I managed to get him to drink some water with probiotics in. He seems happier when he's with me than alone outside. He's still got some fight in him because he does not want me to look down his throat. At all! No avian vets around. There's nc state university but I have called before but they talked like it required a lot and a lot of money. There's a place in Cary but they are outrageous!

Where are you located? My large animal vet in Youngsville treats chickens.

Ditto to above...check with a large animal vet in your area...you never know!
