Never used the nipples, but I use old gallon vinegar jugs with the front cut out and a slice cut through the handle so I can hang it on the wire so the chickens don't run off with it. Easy to clean or replace when not and I can hit it to break ice in them, if they also break with the ice I simply replace it.

I have one question, do you prefer chicken nipples/open water containers? Thanks Everyone in advance!
chicken nipples....just made a smaller bucket for my 9 week old EE's.....keeps water clean and I keep a regular bucket in with the big girls...The lid keeps the trash and dirt out out of it..

I use automatic dog water bowls fed by 55 gal drums. I don't like the nipples because that's just too many bits to clean every day. The bowls are easy to run a brush through morning and evening. And they still do automatic fill. For me it's got the benefits of both systems.

I use the nipples and love them, but they aren't for everyone. In the summer I add an open source gallon water bowl in the run with ice and/or electrolytes and I probably don't have to, but I worry about my babies. :)
In the winter, I have a small fish tank heater in the 5 gallon bucket with nipples and that keeps everything perfectly de-iced (and warm!).
I have found vinegar or diatomaceous earth keep algae from growing in my buckets in the summer and it's not hard to clean when you're about to refill it anyway. :)

Thanks everyone for the answers, I'll use the nipples through winter/spring and switch too open containers for summer and keep those fresh and cold! Thanks again!

So the light on the timer seemed to work just fine for the chicks last night. They were a little fussy when it first went out, but mostly just "Talkative".

I also found out last night that they LOVE earth worms. The games of keep away, even though there were plenty to go around, were funny to watch.
My girls love strawberries, so I took the tops that I cut off and diced them up (greens and all) and put those in with the chicks. It took them about an hour to figure out that they were food, and they seemed to enjoy those as well.
I put in a few grapes this morning, but they hadn't touched them before I had to leave for work.

Well, I almost had a free thanksgiving dinner this morning. A wild turkey hen flew into the middle of my lane, had she done it about 3 seconds later, I'd nailed her. Thankfully I only go about 45 on that road due to all the wildlife.

Hope everyone is above water this morning.

Most people I know seem to prefer using a shotgun for hunting turkey not a mini-van, but what do I know?

Speaking of Turkeys.....does anyone raise them? My wife saw some turkey chicks at the feed store where we got our chickens and she LOVED them.
