My chickens make a mess of their water....and food. I blame myself as the feeder is a hanging one that I have yet to hang. It's also undersized as they are now just about full grown chickens and no longer chicks.
We are adding the run to the coop this weekend, so it will be a good time for upgrading the feeder and watering situation. I'm considering going the 5 gallon bucket with nipples route. Anyone have any thoughts on that?

I took out the original waterer (that kept getting so messy) and hung the nipple bucket, flipped my finger on the nipple to let them notice the water that dripped......and that was it !! So it took about 5 minutes !!

Yeah, I got that JT. Hahaha. Mainly what I was asking was best methods. Is there something better than a modified 5 gallon bucket with nipples? (other than 2, 5 gallon buckets)

You can rig something up with PVC pipes and a regulator to a water hose.
Or do PVC hooked up to a rain barrel.
I would like to go the rain barrel route but my chicken coop doesn't have gutters so I've got to do that first.

I did find 2 alternatives that I might be interested in. Would allow a different orientation.. Check these 2 sites out. One of them is a "for sale" thing but you can look at it and make it yourself. Found both on Pinterest sites

This app does not like my phone!!!! Grrrr!!!:/ so aggravating stupid iphone! Anywho moved my flock to a happier area of the yard a few days ago they didn't lay the first day! But holy guacamole! They have a nest half the size of their coop now with eggs everywhere! Goofy chicken don't even want to lay in their boxe their happy with their new spot I guess. Only problem they keep escaping when I try to feed them! :( as long as the doggies don't bother them I suppose its fine but I have one stubborn hen that just hates me! She is the only one who refuses to come to me no matter what! She acts like a beaten dog! :( she's always been this way but she got out and it took me 2 hours to get her back in the coop! 2 hours y'all! And my rooster seems to be liking the ladies a little too much. I have a few who have not feathers on their hind ends. Any ideas? Oh one more thing! I got 2 new bantam EEs and I think they're both hens!!!! Yet! ;)

It's another lovely day and all this sunny weather has
me wanting to do a day trip to the coast. I wonder if I
can get my homebody DH to cut loose for a day at the
beach........I'm sure I can get some grandbabies to
come along.
