North Carolina

Found a decent sized hog nose snake in the yard yesterday. It was a black phase one, but if you looked close you could still see some of it's pattern. Since I couldn't leave it in my yard due to the high risk of death, lots of people around here think the only good snake is a dead one (neighbor doesn't even want dead ones on his place) I took it to my parents house and the kids let it go. Maybe it will breed with the other hog nose I took over earlier this summer, that's if they aint the same gender. Haven't seen many hog nose snakes in the past years (these two from this year and a baby from last year). Been at the current house for 14 years and even before at my parents house they had slowly just disappeared. Normally I take the rat snakes (which a lot of people call chicken snakes and insist on killing no matter what) or any other snakes down to a wooded area and release them to do what nature intended for them to do. This year I did keep two small rat snakes that I had caught and I put them to work in my shed (where I keep my feed for all the animals), I aint seen any signs of mice for a while now. Even managed to catch a copper head and moved it down the road also.

Hope everyone has a good weekend.

What breeds do you have available and price

Black austarlorp, ee, rir, welsummer, light Sussex, if lucky some Silkie eggs. This is what is avalible now. I have several other breeds but I have no eggs to spare in those breeds. But for future reference. I have lavender Orpington, red laced wyadotte, buff ORP, white leg horn, Cochins, barred rocks and black sexlinks. I can do I great surprise barnyard mix lol. Umm as for price 5$ for a dozen hatching eggs? Fair? I really have no clue what they go for lol

Good morning! Can't believe I am on here before CSB!

I had my first hawk attack yesterday, I lost one of the Ameracauna roosters I was planning to take to doubleAtraining today. But now my chickens won't come out of their coop and the ducks won't hardly come out of the chicken run in. Which is okay, the longer they stay hidden, the more likely the hawk is to lose interest and move on. I moved my wind petal out there and a wind chime to see if that will help scare it off. I also ordered an owl from Amazon.

Their coop and run, and the duck house and pools are in my back yard, a 100 x 100 attached fenced area. Originally, I wanted chickens that would free range in my pasture/barn area, but instead, I decided to put them up close where I thought they would be safer. I understand that hawks are part of the risk when free-ranging, but I hate that my animals are now petrified.

Any advice?

I don't post early on weekends and days off.....usually too busy
or still asleep at 0 AM in the morning.

We have all our runs covered with netting to keep out the owls, hawks and
other predators and that works well for us. Some folks use "hides" for chickens
in large areas. I think Hollow mentioned using pallets raised up on blocks for the
chickens to get under when a hawk is nearby. We don't kill off the wildlife here,
predators and all. We trap and relocate some but most of all we build our pens
and coops to keep them all out. Most of our loses are to snakes and we do our
best to cat and relocate most of those but there are some e leave here like king
snakes and hog nose snakes.......they are helpful. Rat snakes are okay until they
start getting big, then they get moved too.

Most folks sell fertile hatching eggs for $1-$2 each depending on the breed.
The Lavender Orps would go for $25- $35 pr dz. Same with the RLW, Sussex,
Wellies and maybe even the Aussies. All the others at least $12-$15 a dz.

Happy Weekend!

Yes! I take pallets and put legs on them (hubby does, really) and place them out in the pastures. The chickens then have a place close to run to if a hawk is seen. Works well here. They just need some cover. Ours have pretty good sections of pasture to run on. I think I have pictures on my profile. I'll need to look.

DUTCHBUNNY...how are you doing since the stroke. Don't be a stranger.

Spent this morning sending the last dozen Cornish X to freezer camp. After we get cleaned up and hubby gets back from a run to the dump, we'll hop on one of his Harleys and zip over to Wilmington for the gun show. I always keep my eye out for powder horns. Powder horns I can afford. I want to hang a bunch of them on a small section of wall. I don't want to pay a couple hundred apiece for them, but when I find one for $20-$30 bucks I grab it.
