North Carolina

:welcome   I'm in Sanford as well. If you are interested, I have a few 9 wk Olive Eggers and 15 chicks(Ameraucana x Silkie cross and some Lavender Ameraucana) from the New Year's Hatch a long that you can have FREE!  Pullets and Cockerels

Really!? I've been trying to find an olive egger or Ameraucana to add to our group. That would be wonderful!! I definitely would love to have a couple.

Good morning all. Hope everyone is prepared for this warm weather for the next couple of days.

I got a call this morning at 6:30 AM telling me my babies arrived at the post office. They allowed me to
come down, ring the bell, and get them. Got them from e-fowl. Austrolorps, 25, and all arrived alive and
look good with the exception of one. It is about half the size of the others. But it is the cutest one in the
bunch.

Everything was prepared in advance for their arrival. Just hope they are OK during this weather. May
have to go sleep with them tonight.

Do any of you have Indian Runner ducklings or eggs?

BHep, I know I got a couple from you a few years ago...

I've got a good chicken flock going, but want to add a few runners. They're great egg layers and I like their awkwardness. :)

I'm in Zebulon, east of Raleigh.

For the record, I'm getting zero eggs right now. I used to get at least a few in the cold months.

I'm a big fan of Australorps!

I'm getting fewer winter eggs than I have in ten years...and I have more chickens than I have had in the ten years. Go figure.

Today is quarterly AI testing. She can't come until late morning, so I can't go to work until after. Breaks my heart!

This is my first winter as a "chicken. Mama"... And I'm terrifiedfor my girlies the next two nights... Their coop is well built and I know they snuggle in... But still... I'm able to blanket my horses

... How does every handle these cold temps? Happy Wednesday!!

Resist the urge to use a heat lamp and to completely enclose the coop. The major concern during cold weather is frostbite. Frostbite becomes a bigger concern when there is too much humidity in the coop...this can be exacerbated by heating lamps and poor ventilation. Just make sure they have somewhere to roost where they are protected from wind shears and they are equipped to handle the rest!

PS, I put a blanket on my old mare this morning too :)

Australorps are my second favorite. My favorite is the Light Sussex. Of which I have ZERO. And I will not be getting any now. Because I leave in 30 days for the Philippines. And it could be several years before I return for a long enough period of time to get any. I do plan on trying to import some into the Philippines. Which is one massive amount of red tape and a considerable amount of money. I already have a flock of Philippine chickens there but, they are skinny and only lay 1 or 2 eggs per week.

That's interesting because I have less chickens and they are laying more than I could have ever imagined. Three are laying an average of 15 eggs per week. All the others are on strike and laying absolutely ZERO. One that is laying is a barred rock and she is on a record pace. She misses one day out of seven.
