Speaking of coops, I'm starting construction on a new one and Ofcourse that "one neighbor" called another neighbor saying I was starting a whole chicken farm and was going to stink up and ruin the whole neighborhood! Really?? So two questions please??
1) I live in Guilford County ( outside city limits) and can't find any laws or ordinances about keeping chickens here. Does anyone know?
2) also just a poll question.. How many chickens do you have on how much land?
( I have around 50 on about an acre :) )
Thanks!!

I live in Davie county in a nice neighborhood. There is no laws about not having chickens or how many. As long as you live in the county then there is no ordinance. If you live in a neighborhood you could have bylaws. In my neighborhood the only bylaws we have is that you cannot fence the front yard your house it says nothing about having chickens or any other livestock. As far as your neighbors worried about living around chickens if they don't like it then they should move to somewhere that had rules against them. I'm sure I have a few neighbors that don't like my rooster crowing wee hours of the morning but I don't say nothing about there dogs barking all the time.
I don't thi 50 is that many on a acre

Thank you! Half of them are bantams and they are in nice neat coops, in my back yard! This is the neighborhood I actually grew up in, my parents moved here in the 60's.. That's how old it is.. So it's an old country neighborhood, not the classy suburbs. And this neighbor lives 2 blocks away! Ok sorry for the rant :).

We are here to listen to the rants and put in our opinions

This is the perfect place to rant!

I'm not in your county and not in a neighborhood, but I'm county rather than city and have around 200 chickens on 5.5 acres. We are surrounded by 115 acres of cropland.

I am angry tonight. My order of quail eggs came in yesterday. I had requested that they label the box to hold for pickup so the eggs didn't sit in the mailbox and freeze. They didn't. That was an irritant. But when I unpacked them after letting them rest a day, and opened the broken eggs to see the condition on the yolks and check fertility, the first one was rotten. Very, very rotten. I am now angry.

Even in old neighborhoods it is possible to have bylaws or covenants attached to your property. See if your county has online deed/property records. Our county (Orange) has a system where you just type in the address and then it gives you a link to ALL the documents attached to that property. It takes some time to look through them (most will be related to sale/mortgage) but you definitely want to make sure there aren't any covenants restricting poultry because if there are, your neighbor *could* file legal charges... Don't ask me how I know.... ;)
