I have a door that can be lowered from the front of my coop by rope. The rope is run through hook and eyes to the front of the house that I lift with. Makes it easy to close at night and lift the next morning. Welcome to the site. Love my chickensHi everyone! I'm new to this thread and pretty new to this site! But I'm soooo addicted to chickens! I just love them! We live out in Aberdeen. I was so happy to see a NC thread especially if it helps finding hatching eggs that I can go pick up. So far I don't seem to be having the best of hatch rates with shipped eggs, but then again I just starting chicken raising this spring. Hoping my next hatch goes better in the next few days. Questions for all of you that have a walk in hen house. Do you open and closes the chicken door (leading to enclosed run) from inside the coop, or outside? I have it on the inside right now, but I am thinking of changing it to the outside bc when they go in at night I don't like disturbing them. Thoughts?![]()
If Jackson Springs isn't too far from you, then I know a LF Cochin breeder out there who has beautiful Cochins and she takes really good care of her birds! I love my Cochins! I'm in Aberdeen and she's like a 20 min drive for me if that helps![]()

Thank y ou and Welcome to BYC! I looked it up and Jackson Springs is about an hour and a half from meI will definitely keep it in mind and hopefully in the spring I can get some. Right now we are up to 30 chickens so far and 12 eggs in the incubator lol. My husband is new to chickens and I grew up with/ariund them my whole life so I am slowly turning him into a chicken man lol. Thankfully he has been quite easy to persuade but I am not one to push the line of luck and he has already his favorite breeds and we have only just begun. I love all chickens but I will admit I have favorites. And I am trying to get things set up for next spring to start breeding. I am going to experiment with color crosses my first go round and maybe a couple of breed crosses also. One of my chicken providers has a Wyandotte, LF Cochin cross and he is the biggest prettiest roo I have seen in awhile he is as tall as my 2 year old daughter. So needless to say I am wanting to try my hand with that cross lol I have a what I believe to be a standard cochin cockrel in a gold lace and a wyandotte pullet thats silver laced. Sorry I am a rambler. But a huge thank you for pointing me in the right direction. Maybe you could pm me her info to save for spring.
Sure send me the info if you dont mind
www.citychickshatchery.com is a good source for chicks and pullets, really nice young lady but she does not have silkies. She does, however have Tolbant polish.Hello Everyone,
I live in North Carolina, Wake County. I have been able to find a few local farms that sell chicks however I am looking to get 1 silkie. I have not been able to find any silkie chicks. I am almost finished building my coop and have a horse trough made to be a brooder. Does anyone know of anything? I found places online but they want you to buy 10+ and unfortunately I am only looking to get 3 hens although my coop can fit 5-6. I live on a half acre, backyard is fenced in, and have been researching how to care for chickens for months. Now that we are home owners I can finally have a small flock.
