North Carolina

Hello NC, new member here just checking in from Moore County. I have a supply question. I just built a new coop and designed it to use the deep litter method. I am using Hemp as litter in the coop but am having trouble finding a local source. Lots available online but shipping is expensive. Any one else use hemp and know where to buy it local. The closest I have found is American Hemp in Winston Salem. I don't mind making the drive, but they don't communicate very well. Having trouble getting a consistent response from them.

Hello, neighbor.

I don't know about the hemp. I used shavings in my coop and deep litter on a foundation of pine straw in my run -- pine straw being free for the raking around here.
I use chips in my run, but would love to use the hemp there too if I can find a good supplier at an affordable price. The hemp seems to be better at controlling moisture and smell. I was skeptical at first but am highly impressed with it so far.

Just wanted to share that I'll have some easter Eggers/black copper marans hopefully hatching in the next couple of weeks. I'm located in Alexander county if anyone is interested 😊

Hey y'all! Figured I'd check in and announce that I have 2 lavender Orpington roo's for sale near the Sylva area! Only $20 each and they are already good size for being only 14 wks

That big dust cloud is supposed to be coming through NC this weekend, anyone know if this is something we need to be concerned about for our birds? I really can't find much info online except 'people with allergies/asthma may want to stay indoors'. If that's all, I would think my older hen can handle it okay but I have two 6-week-old pullets who I'd imagine would be more sensitive to stuff like that. Any thoughts?

I'd like to praise the service I got at Carolina Town & Country in Sanford on Friday.

I'm afraid that I forgot to write down the name of the helpful woman who never lost patience with the multiple people asking her the same questions about the shipment of chicks that had been delayed in the mail and who was so knowledgeable and thoughtful.

She helped me pick out two probably SLW's from the "Assorted Wyandotte bin and didn't grudge me the extra minutes it took to decide on breeds after discovering that the hatchery hadn't sent the Delawares.

No affiliation, just a first-time customer appreciative of good service.
