Whew! I made it!

. Do you think it's okay to have a glass of wine while on antibiotics?? I could use one tonight!

took 30 min after the assembly for my hearing to return to normal... Our principal did not look amused especially when some overzealous juniors pulled their shirts off (boys) to flash their painted chests. Did I mention our superintendent decided to attend today's assembly, first time I've seen him at an assembly in the 10.years I've been teaching there!

Beth, let me tell you that I have a firm belief that there is a special place in heaven for bus drivers!! I have nothing but respect for you because after a day trapped in a classroom, I can tell you I'd never make it for hours ttrapped on a moving vehicle with them!! I love my students, but that is too much!!

Ally, Congrats on your two new layers!!

Ally.... My Polish rarely leave the barn, if they do, they stay pretty close. The rest of the flock are ALL over the place. I will guess....it's because they can't see very well. We call them the "homebodies"

You need another.......

SCM.... I personally do not think it is too late yet. I have 4 mama's out there now with babies all 1-2 weeks old. Last year my Silkies hatched Serama in Nov. We did have a exceptionally cold winter last year. I did have low watt heat lamps out there. I use 75 watt reptile lights. They glow blue/purple so don't seem to bother anyone. And I WISH my Polish were laying too.

Guineas ALL flew up in the tree tonight

hope they do ok.

I caused total mayhem in the barn tonight. This afternoon, I stripped the barn down & out. Pulled all the grow-out pens, broody boxes & ripped down one coop. I cleaned and started rearranging everything for winter. Half went or were herded into a temporary pen. The rest caught and locked up in other pens. Everyone was fussing & complaining. Tomorrow I will finish and put everyone back in. I will be moving some around. Egg strike is sure to come.

Ally and doublea - I may see you there, too if I can't find any hatching eggs anywhere else! Though Bhep - I'm still considering your Austrolorps!

Any ideas what kind of eggs I might see at the auction and if they'd be any good??? I've only been once briefly but didn't see any eggs while there. Good luck to your guineas tonight, bhep and with your massive project! And thanks for the tips as always. I have my ceramic heat emitter that has no light that I used when these guys were little that I was planning to stick in the coop if it gets too cold so hopefully that will do the trick! Oh, and got my brooder deal all set up today and am heading out to try and move Miss Esme in there. Wish me luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've 2 bantam cochin hens sleeping in nests tonight. Both are molting and have decided the nests are warmer then being on a roost beside other birds. Bella exploded 2 days ago. She started one of the heaviest molts I have every seen. She has covered their side of the coop with blue feathers. You can also tell everywhere in the yard she has been and the places she stopped to rest.

I have the houses shut up almost enough for winter right now. Everything(doors, windows, vents) is closed off enough to keep in their warmth, but still allows proper ventilation. It is a delicate balance for the Dutch. Those little birds hate the cold, but I don't want to burn their sinuses.

Doubt there will much in hatching eggs this time of year, but worth a try

Usually Quail. I have gotten eggs from there, some good, some bad, some what they should be, some not.

Don't worry if Esme doesn't want to stay in there yet. She may not. I let them sit on some dud eggs for a few days, then when they get good and broody I move them.
Goood Luck !!!

Matt...you might need to get Bella a sweater

I wonder if heavy molts mean colder winters
