North Carolina

Good afternoon everyone. Not much going on down on this farm here. Chicks are chirping, ducks are "nesting" on the deck and chickens are wandering around aimlessly (unless DD opens the door just to be cruel!!). I am a tad bit jealous of my husband's family as they are in for a blizzard this weekend, so they are guaranteed a WHITE Christmas!! This however, makes me nervous as his parents and sister were suppose to be joining us for Christmas and I went through all the trouble of buying a cow and stuffing our freezer for this visit (okay, not really, but I just wanted to blame them for my freezer being full...already). I hope if any of you have family up north, they are safe!! So far the snow accumulation in Wisconsin is already a foot and still coming down, power outages are starting to hit the area and people are hunkering down!! Glad my chicks and other critters are down here, safe!! Have a great evening everyone!!
DS is just over in Boone. He was supposed to come in tomorrow, but with the snow predictions, he says he's coming tonight. Good for him to be a bit proactive! I'll even have him a place to sleep ready!

New bedroom set is delivered and in place.

Furnace is still broke!

Need yet another part.

Thank goodness for electric mattress pads and fireplaces!

Family concerns are eating up the rest of the month, and even dictating that I pick up Levi two days after I otherwise could.

Well, I could get him, but then he'd be home alone the next day, all day Not good. So they'll hold him until I can not abandon him immediately.

Back to cleaning.

NH.....let me remind that you keep using a
four letter word and if you do you will jinx us all

We have made good progress on a temp pen
for the young turkeys and am hoping to have
them moved this weekend....it's been a slow
going with lots of distractions from the work on it.

Hope everyone has a good day

Good Morning, Snowy People! (and those of us just cold, too!)

crystalgoltz,

Heading off to Wal-Mart in a few minutes. I need a few things, but nothing worth fighting crowds for! Hubby and I both slept in..and he's still in bed, but not for long!

I ordered lovely small dry erase boards, hubby drilled holes in them, and now I have a board on each rabbit cage and in each chicken house. I can keep track of breeding records until they are made permanent, and anything else I need to note.

I had one of the two-month-olds get stuck in a spot under the nest boxes (which is now filled in). The rest of them of course took advantage of the situation and pecked the beejeepers out of her poor head. Down to the skull, with about a quarter size of skin missing. She is now lodged inside in a kennel, and is rapidly becoming a pet. I did not need a pet. But she thinks I do. She's a pretty little EE. Her head is healing, now that nobody is pecking on her. I may move her out to the younger pen this weekend if it continues. It never fails to amaze me what chickens can recover from! In fact, birds in general. I had a rooster spur a huge slash in a broody muscovy once. I thought for sure she would die from it, but she didn't. And a goose that got foxed once, but apparently beat the fox off with her wings...took a month, but she did okay, too! Birds are awesome!

Oh...and the furnace STILL isn't fixed. One more part needed that is coming today. Hopefully today will see it fixed, or the kids will be complaining about how cold their bedrooms are...the fireplace doesn't reach that far!

Have a great day everyone!

Good morning everyone!!
welcome-byc.gif
to all the new people!! Glad to have you here!! Just hop right in and join the conversation!! Be sure to tell us what you have and when you can...PICTURES - it fuels our addiction. Hehe
Lots and lots of rain last night...no snow!

My yard and run are a squishy mess and of course the ducks are LOVING it!! Today is DH's last night shift, and he should be home any moment. I do NOT understand how other families manage different shifts. I like my furnace at home with me at night...one can only sleep with so many down comforters and socks!!

Just a few more days until the in-laws arrive and I am NOT ready!! My house is STILL a disaster zone from trying to fit a piano into the room and all this last minute baking I've been doing. I do think I will have a FULL freezer by Saturday though, as we ordered a portion of a cow from our co-op and well...I'm still at a loss of what to fix for my FIL!! That man will NOT eat anything with flavor. His idea of tacos is ground beef with ketchup in a hard shell only. No cheese, no lettuce, no salsa and heaven forbid there was actually SEASONING! I cried the last time they were here because I spent a fortune, worked so hard and unless my MIL cooked it, he didn't eat it.

Most meals my MIL would say in a shocked voice, "This is surprisingly good" as if she expected me to be some horrible cook (which I'll admit when it comes to certain things: lamb, seafood, exotic stuff, etc...I am!!). <sigh> Anyone want to cook for me this coming week?
big_smile.png
I cannot complain as they plan to build a bunch of things as their busy projects!!
This Christmas I am getting: a GREENHOUSE, an in-ground duck pond (complete with filters and plants - like I am going to be able to keep THAT clean) and the gang is going to build a tractor style large brooder (as well as build a door for the one that is on loan to us - as a thank you)...I'm not sure how this all will get done in a week, but hey...more power to them!!

Hollow - your stories of birds being tough made me giggle!! I LOVE watching Cadbury "wing bat" the guineas when he gets tired of them pestering him. He just straightens up and SMACK right in the face with a wing!! TOO FUNNY!! I can imagine how that would beat off a number of predators (or pests)!

Have a great day everyone!! Today is FRIDAY!!

Homesteader where in Johnston county do you live. Been out moving the chickens around , move my bantams inside the barn to keep the wind off of them. hope all are staying warm and dry, It could be worse , we could have all the snow they have in the northwest. That's a funny question. If you ask friends, they will say in the middle of NOWHERE....if you ask the Post Office they would say Middlesex, but in reality it's the middle of nowhere. We are a good 25 minutes from the town of Middlesex (which is also a different county...I don't get it) a good 25 minutes from Wendell, 30 minutes from Clayton, Selma, Knightdale and if we're heading into Raleigh, it's a 45 minute plus drive. I'm not joking when I say our house is "dropped" in the middle of a forest, thus we call our place the Meadow!!

Hope everyone is having a good day today!! DH just informed me that I NEED to go to the store to pick up snack foods that his dad will eat
he.gif
It's Christmas, so I won't say the thoughts rolling around in my head!!
tongue2.gif
There, I just made a sound....that feels better. Now to figure out what "snacks" he'll actually eat and see if there is anything left in the grocery store! BAH!! I think I'd rather have a chicken at the table and send him to the coop if he's going to be that picky!! Hmmm... Mama Cochin sitting at the head of the table...now THERE'S an image for you!!
lau.gif
It's blustery out there, so be sure to keep your hat on, or for you ladies with long hair (like myself) keep your hair pinned/tacked down or else all visibility will be down to nil!! LOL

I know I hate when my hair has knots in it.

Quote: You can't get around picky eaters. I once asked in advance about my inlaws kids, and were told the only veggie they really liked was green beans. That was great, because the garden was overflowing with green beans! I made lovely stir-fried-with-almonds geen beans. My family ate heartily, theirs didn't touch them. Turns out they only ate store bought canned green beans. They'd never had fresh ones and weren't interested in trying them. And despite all the fruit and raw veggie munchies, and stew in the crock pot, they had to go to the store and get a bag of chips, because the kids were hungry!

Just smile, remind yourself it will soon be over...and find excuses to go sit with chickens.
