Good morning folks

I keep waiting for Mother Nature to bring
on the winter blast but it always seems to
never be more than a tease for a few days.
I'm not in a hurry for it to be cold but then again
we need that cold period to get things back
on track. The chickens aren't sure if they
should be in winter break mode or not......
hopefully we can get to a normal weather
pattern soon.....as much as that will hurt the joints.

Good luck with that :D .. I'm in Hiddenite , NC and ive not seen (Normal) weather a few years . seams out winters now consist of ether switching between lots of Rain with warmer weather one day and pretty cold the next ,all winter long

What I hate is these cold damp cloudy days- 98degrees for me

by the way I hate air condx in summer too

For most of my younger life i preferred the cold over the heat , even running around in the coldest weather with the lightest of cloths
Now as Ive gotten a bit older it seams I'm a lot less cold tolerant and need to bundle up for anything under 50 *

Good Morning, Happy Chicken People!

A bit frosty this morning with frozen rabbit bottles to be switched out. The remaining chickens are fine. Should be, since I locked them up. I now have a timer on my phone specifically for chicken locking up. I should have done that before, as I'm re-learning old patterns again.

Back to work today. Working up a new pattern for tha tthis mornin, too, as now there's a puppy who needs caring for, plus my work hours shift every semester. I do not have to get up at 5:00 this semester!!! WooHoo! 6:00 will work, I think. Yay!

Welcome to the new folks!

Enjoy your day everyone!

Okay, you guys are going to love this.

My son called me when I was on my way to work this morning. He led off with telling me it was the worst morning of his entire life. I was about to pull over, as I was envisioning everything from him calling from the hospital to his beloved dog being run over, to...well, lots of horrors!

He had come home on Dec 21, and left on the 30th...last Sunday. This morning was the first time he had taken out trash. His trash can is provided by his landlord. It has no lid, and it has no holes drilled in it, so he often has to dump water out of it. This morning he went to put his trash in, and noticed it was frozen. He also noticed what looked like one of Dusty's dog toys that had accidently been thrown away, so he broke the ice to pull it out.

And found out that sometime while he was gone, a skunk had climbed into the trash can and drowned in the water. With warming and thawing, the skunk was half decomposed. And because it had been frightened, it was skunky ripe. Since it had been frozen over, he hadn't smelled anything...until he broke the ice. He said it was the first time a smell had ever made him throw up. He was calling me to ask how to get it out of the trash can and how to clean the can.

I told him to put on old clothes, put a bag over that trash can, load it in the open back of the Jeep and get the whole she-bang to the dump. Then wash the clothes immediately and shower. I'll buy the new trash can, with lid, to replace it! (He's in college at Boone, so is Broke College Student)

Better him than me! And I still had to pull over, as I was laughing too much to drive!

Question: I have had my younger birds outside in a brooder/run on the ground with a red light in the box for heat. They are now hanging out outside in the run all night. not sleeping out there but like being awake and scratching all night...even when it's below freezing. Is this because it's too hot in the box house or are they not on a sleep schedule because of the light?
