Ok I am new to chickens, got them in March. This morning I went out to check to see if their water was froze. This was around 5:15 am, so I had a flashlight with me. I went into the run and shined the light on all the kids that were out. Evidently our rooster didn't see the light. When I turned around to make sure the door to the run was shut, he jumped on my leg. It took me a few seconds to realize what had just happened. Not the first time he has jumped on me or my daughter. Out of reaction I kicked and he was between my boot and the cinder blocks that the water sits on. Reached down and grabbed him to see if he was hurt bad. I was wearing steel toes boots. Well when I got home this afternoon, I go out and let them out in the yard. Noticed that he was limping and didn't hear him crow. Grabbed him up and tried to do a once over to see if anything broken that I could feel. Didn't notice anything. He stayed way away from me the whole time out in the yard. My question for anyone is what should I do other than watch him for awhile. Thanks for your help with this. Also another question, how can I break him from trying to jump us when we are in the yard. Thanks again.

Sounds like he got the hint now !

I am! My husband found one at lunch and when I came home 2 hours later and was cleaning up the yard I found to more. So I posted it all over facebook. I am still super stoked, cant wait for morning to come and see if there are more lol.. And I also thought I broke my chickens cause they are all almost 8 months or older and no one had laid eggs yet
OMGosh, My facebook is full of nothing but pics of our chickens, ducks, and their first eggs

too... Our Buff Brahma and Rouen ducks have yet to lay either and they are getting close to that age, figure it will happen when spring gets here I'm sure. Our EE gave us a Christmas present though, a pretty blue/green egg right next to the water bowl on Christmas eve, totally surprised me cause I had given up hope till warmer weather returns. Our newer girls all have seemed to lay their first eggs randomly around the yard (even though they have spent a lot of time investigating the nesting boxes weeks in advance).

I have more pictures of my animals than I do anything else. And when I found two eggs I was like holy cow treasure hunt! And I really want an Easter Egger. We had a chick but sadly she passed young. I think they lay the coolest eggs.

OK guys, I have to brag about my brave guy...

He is 6 months old, his father is my Dark Brahma rooster (huge) and his mother is one of my Buff Orps. He is pretty big - 11lb and very sweet towards humans, but a little too rough on the hens, to the point that I had decided to take him to frezer camp.

Two days ago, I let the flock out close to the woods, while doing some chores nearby. All of a sudden, I hear my cockerel growling and running towards the woods, his hackle feathers up, looking like a deranged wild thing. I was puzzled - why was he doing that - until I see this fox running for his life!!! Awesome guy! He just won a reprieve - I just hope he stops being so rough with some of the hens...

Okay, you guys are going to love this..

And found out that sometime while he was gone, a skunk had climbed into the trash can and drowned in the water. With warming and thawing, the skunk was half decomposed. And because it had been frightened, it was skunky ripe. Since it had been frozen over, he hadn't smelled anything...until he broke the ice. He said it was the first time a smell had ever made him throw up. He was calling me to ask how to get it out of the trash can and how to clean the can.

I told him to put on old clothes, put a bag over that trash can, load it in the open back of the Jeep and get the whole she-bang to the dump. Then wash the clothes immediately and shower. I'll buy the new trash can, with lid, to replace it! (He's in college at Boone, so is Broke College Student)

Better him than me! And I still had to pull over, as I was laughing too much to drive!
The smell of a skunk is hard to clean up! I remember all to well what it took me to clean off my granddads old Ford 8-N tractor,

after I just happened to Sic a dog on a skunk (that I could not see very well) in the predawn, while bringing up the cows for morning milking on what was a start to a very nice spring day.

We are in the spring lake/ft Bragg area. We are going to a flock swap today and if anyone has some we are going to get one or two.

Good Morning, Happy People!

Haven't done chores yet this morning. It's my last sleep in morning and I took advantage of it!

Levi did really well my first day back at work. I did a short day and was only gone 7 1/2 hours, but that's a long time for a puppy. Still, he didn't poop inside! He held it! WooHoo! Physical control for holding that comes faster than for pee, so Step 1 is good. I also took him for a ride yesterday, to see how he did. All other rides he's been held. I took a kennel in case, but as soon as the car started, he curled up and went to sleep. Since I won't be able to kennel him in the car as an adult, he really needs good car manners, and I think we have a good start.

House Chicken is going to give a try at going in with younger birds today. Cross your crossables! I'd really like to not have a house chicken!

This iPad won't let me do quotes, but Mary, I love your pics. Ya'll have beautiful birds!
CSB, is that swap at TSC? I might come by to say hello, if I can grab the time.

Enjoy your day everyone!
