x2!! I don't think I have EVER been this excited to see eggs in the coop. I did my little egg dance yesterday when I picked up THREE in the morning, then DH went out last night to do late night checks...and he finds our FIRST OLIVE egg...all this time I thought she was laying, and it just wasn't olive...turns out...she had a surprise for us!!

That also means our little BSL (who doesn't LOOK old enough) has actually been laying!!

We're suppose to have beautiful weather on Saturday, so I hope everyone is able to turn on the "chicken TV" tomorrow and fully enjoy it!! I am (once the fence is finished) setting everyone free this weekend (laying is "routine" now) including the younger girls and I am going to try to lock them all up together - keeping a few of the boys separate!! We've decided to expand the big coop and that way we can have a meat side and a "normal" side...LOL. We're doing this so we can lock up No Name Rooster (ie BIG MEATY BSL) with some of the freedom ranger females and then we'd have excellent meat birds...IF it works out...LOL.

Have a wonderful day everyone!!

ETA: This is a non-chicken question, but I thought some of you might know...I'm looking for recommendations for a Pediatrician for our kids...if anyone knows of any that aren't TOO far (remember I'll have a newborn this summer) from Johnston County/Raleigh, please let me know...Bonus: if they are OKAY with non-vaccinated children (long story short - we can't vaccinate one due to complications and she would need to be separated from the rest for 2 weeks per vaccine, so we decided to forgo it for all.). Thank you in advance!!

What would be an ideal size for a brooder for 25 chicks? And in this Carolina weather(that's getting warmer by the day :) :) :) ) what's the shortest or longest amount of time they will be brooded before moving to the coop?

IMHO - People should use their own pics.... especially for something like this.... so people can see what they are getting their eggs off of.

I agree, it's misleading. This is why I only buy certain things from ebay, never any eggs because you can never be too sure. When I sell I always over ride and use my own pics. Some people unfortunately just don't know how to be honest or just don't care to be.

I asked my brother who he uses (they live in Raleigh). He and his wife use Dr. Jerry Bernstein at Raleigh Pediatrics for their three kids. They really like him. My brother didn't know if that practice has any position on the non-vaccination issue, but you could just call and ask. If you decide to use them, let them know Brandon and Janie Roe referred him. 919-872-0250.

Oh well I was so hoping to free-range my chickens as they got a little older to help with our bugs and ticks during the summer. But our lab seems to be a little aggressive with them. He is outside all the time and doesn't take to being tied up. We also have a beagle that is mainly inside but goes out when we do. He howls a lot but is a scare-dy cat.

Bummer.... any suggestions....

We are processing four chickens this weekend and some more next weekend. Yea! Finally getting rid of these Cornish that eat all the time!

Hunting dogs are often harder to teach chicken manners to. Sometimes impossible. They have been bred to have a high prey drive, albeit a controllable one. But without the control, they can become the worst around livestock. Same for untrained herding dogs. Kinda hard on a dog to ask it to go against its bred-in instincts. Some can do it. Some can't. The ones that are out of lines that have been pet or show longer rather than hunting dogs have the best chance.
