Tidbit and Moores6, congratulations - I love new babies!!! My DH always laughs at me, I spend more time looking in the incubator than I do anything else... then I give him an update on every pip, crack, zip, chick, all followed by the happy chick dance. The next hatch of 33 eggs should be intresting, it is the biggest yet! LOL. I candled one last night and saw a lot of movement.

Melodie - Awwww, I hate moving them outside... I miss the chirping too.

RBaker so sorry about your loss.

Newhomesteader - she might "really" go broody later. I had a hen that gave it a try for a few days, then changed her mind and when broody a month ot two later to hatch out a clutch of chicks. I know it is not the timing you wanted....

Meg - sending hopeful thoughts your way!

Everyone have a wonderful day!

I mean seriously -- 30 MILES! I need more details! I would LOVE to browse 30 miles of garage sale...

This is Blue, the one that was broody.

Here are the chicks with mama while she eats some birdseed.

Hello everyone. Well I finally got some Silkies to hatch after 3 tries. 100% hatch rate for this batch. Trying to include some pics for all to see. Got 8 little ones.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!! They are just adorable..... Makes me want to get a silkie roo so I can let my girls have babies. But, hubby says NO MORE CHICKENS! LOL!

atmaclean- it seems like mites below in on the wind. My polish and or silkies get them first. Re dust in about 2 weeks to kill any eggs that might have hatched. Mites will also go for the weakest/ sick bird, if there is one. I don't know if worming will cause a worm in the egg, but there's pictures on here of worms in eggs.

They say its from an overload of the worms, when they get into the egg tract and thus the egg.

Thanks so much! This is interesting because I didn't see any on the 3 silkies or the one polish hen - and they are in a different pen than the hen I saw mites on....I will definitely be keeping an eye on the mite situation on a weekly basis from now on!! I don't want to go through all that again. The hen that I saw them on was one of my lemon cuckoo orphingtons. I figured she got them because of all the feathers they have!??

I will dust them again this weekend and next weekend. You mentioned 2 weeks? I had read somewhere, I thought, that I should dust them again in a week then in another week. I'd love to wait for 2 weeks, however, if that will work just as well!!! Believe me, I DO NOT look forward to dusting 80 head of chickens/guineas again!!!!!!!!

Can't wait to move chicks outside.

Update on ILT: The local state vet field worker said that I should just vaccinate with the eye drop vaccine, wait 45 days and do whatever I please because everyone who owns chickens for any amount of time in this state will encounter ILT at some point. There is a vector out there in the environment which has not been identified. If I culled my whole flock and started over, I would probably encounter it again at some point.

Many of you have probably already experienced ILT in your flock and just attributed it to something upper respiratory, you've taken your losses and maybe experienced it again in the flock as you've added or subtracted but assumed it was mycoplasmosis or something else.

Upon speaking to my friend who is a poultry vet and who's brain I can pick in a very frank and honest manner, she suggested at least giving the eye dropper vaccine, the Mareks vaccine and any other available vaccines and then ALWAYS putting up some kind of barrier between my own and other chickens at shows. She suggested I quarantine any new birds and any birds returning from shows or swaps for at least 60 days. She also suggested that I seriously reconsider actually showing my best birds and just show their offspring or birds that I wish to sell.

Luckily, I am past the last of my sick birds, I lost five out of my 60. I have a few with secondary infections to whom I am giving doxycycline (this is working great and its easily obtained via ebay as a fish medication, but it comes in the same units that you would put in your chickens water. If you need dosing info, just PM me. You can also get baytril (ciprofloxacin, fishflox) via ebay). None of my bantams got it and neither of my adult ameraucanas got it. Several of my laying hens never came down with symptoms. Neither, of course, did my turkeys or ducks.

Still researching a good and safer method of vaccine, I have my vet friend on it, so we'll see. I'll let everyone know what the best vaccine I come up with is and maybe some of us can split the vaccine.

Very interesting info, also kind of scary. Please keep us posted....
