OK chicken buddies, I've got a sexing question for all you experts! We picked up an older EE chick several weeks ago, and felt fairly confident that it was a hen. Now, we're not so sure. Our son swears he heard it trying to crow! I grabbed some pics with my cell phone while we had it outside enjoying the sun today (it's still on quarantine). Not great pictures, but I'm hoping there's enough detail to tell. What do you think: hen or rooster?

Well crud, I was afraid of that! The little guy seriously looked like a hen a couple of weeks ago! LOL Oh well. Sooo...anyone want a really pretty EE rooster??

LOL! Join the over-populated-with-roosters club! I've got 11 I'm trying to re-home. Some of them include some really gorgeous rare breeds. I've put them on Facebook and Craigslist with not much luck. Roosters are just hard to get rid of. I've had several folks want me to ship my Isbar roosters but I have no idea how to do that.

Every year I see people hatch their own chicks and end up with too many roosters. They try and try to find them homes and a few manage to find homes. Then reality sets in and they have to make the decision to sell them to someone that is going to eat them. This is just how it always ends up, it is a part of hatching your own birds.

Here are long overdue pics of the Lavender Amerucanas I hatched from eggs purchased from CSB (Thanks CSB!!!!). They were taken when the little ones were a day old. Also in the pic are a couple of Easter Eggers from my own chickens.

Below are pics of the pallet coop I started on Thursday. It has been a long three days but it is coming along nicely. It will only be 4x8 and will be the quarantine coop so that should be big enough. On the back, the roof sticks out about 3' as sort of a lean too. This will allow the chickens a place to stay in either the shade or out of the rain while still being outside. It also protects the rear chicken door from rain blowing inside. A later addition will be external nesting boxes on the left side. The pallets and plywood are recycled/reclaimed which cut costs considerably.
