Yeah, I'm taking three pure-bred cockerels to the auction tomorrow. We don't have the time to slaughter them right now, so they might possibly get a chance of going somewhere that they won't be dinner. But they'll stop eating here, which is the main goal.

Here are long overdue pics of the Lavender Amerucanas I hatched from eggs purchased from CSB (Thanks CSB!!!!). They were taken when the little ones were a day old. Also in the pic are a couple of Easter Eggers from my own chickens.

Below are pics of the pallet coop I started on Thursday. It has been a long three days but it is coming along nicely. It will only be 4x8 and will be the quarantine coop so that should be big enough. On the back, the roof sticks out about 3' as sort of a lean too. This will allow the chickens a place to stay in either the shade or out of the rain while still being outside. It also protects the rear chicken door from rain blowing inside. A later addition will be external nesting boxes on the left side. The pallets and plywood are recycled/reclaimed which cut costs considerably.

Those chicks are adorable! The coop is looking good. We're working on a tractor right now. It stopped raining long enough to get the yard mowed and some lumber cut. I was so excited to see the sun...I just wish it had stayed out a little longer.

Every year I see people hatch their own chicks and end up with too many roosters. They try and try to find them homes and a few manage to find homes. Then reality sets in and they have to make the decision to sell them to someone that is going to eat them. This is just how it always ends up, it is a part of hatching your own birds.

Yep, which is (ironically) why we decided not to have roosters and why we have been picking up mostly full-grown hens here and there. This was the first chicken we've gotten that wasn't plenty old enough to be sure about the sex. We're deciding now what we want to do about our little chromosome challenged friend. We can call the person we got him from and they'll take him back, so that's an option. The biggest concern I have is crowing. Our neighbors haven't had a problem with our hens, but they might if we have a rooster crowing his head off at 4am!

Hi everyone! I'm in Troy.....middle of the state. My neighbor has a buff Orpington who has been brooding now for about a month and a half. My neighbor has been at the coast for that time and I have been taking care of her four hens. How long do they brood?? I keep taking her off the nest, feeding her, making her walk around. I have even made her spend the night for a couple of separate nights outside of the nesting box. Her comb is losing color....fading. I have been giving her mealy worms to try to help her. I just don't know what else to do. Any suggestions? Or will she stop soon on her own?

Thanks Moomoo, I love turtles to and as a child I used to keep them(for a while ) this little guy stayed around long enough for me to take pics, and then i let him go on his merry way )

I'm so sorry to hear this. I am so paranoid about that very thing happening to me every time I hear a storm coming.
Where is that in Sanford? I grew up here, but I can't say I've heard of Down on the Farm.
Hope you had a good experience! It's always a toss up for me. I've been lied to and ignored altogether so just gotta use your best judgement and really grill them with questions. Lol
There's actually another swap scheduled for tomorrow (6th) that I plan to go to (if I wake up early enough! Haha). Hoping I'll meet some cool people.

put some electrolytes in her and get her butt off that nest!

Good morning folks

Well some of yesterday didn't work out as planned
and some did.......didn't get the jungle whacked
back but had a good visit with two of our girls, a BF
of the oldest and the grandbabies. Had a cookout and
late 4th of July fireworks/sparklers show. It was a good day

No WCA for me....going to be too hot. I did see a picture posted of the new seating and designated walkways...I like it.

I checked the 10 day forecast....if it does not change and next Sun is indeed in the lower 80s, I will be bring a bunch of extra cockerels and any chicks that don't sell this week. I have bantam Cochin, black & blue...some frizzle. ( If anyone is interested)
