I'm hoping you guys can help me out-- the lavender orpingtons are 10 weeks old. I think I have 3 pullets and a cockeral. Though I'm noticing the "pullets" getting red on their face, is it supposed to be that early? It's been awhile since I've raised one up from chicks, but I was thinking there wasn't any red until they were ready to lay. But their tails and feathering and all is totally different than the cockeral. Also, my two marans I have thought all along were roosters, mostly because of their lack of tail feathers. They are 10 weeks old as well and getting red in the face, but neither have a big comb or wattles. In searching around on here someone had a photo posted of a pair of marans that were 9 weeks old and the pullet looked just like my 2 she even was lacking a tail and the cockeral had huge red combs. Do you think I could actually have 2 pullets or just wishful thinking! Thanks for your input, I greatly appreciate all the chicken wisdom on here!!!
They all look like hens to me :) ETA: are the 4th and 5th pics the marans?? I wonder because they have no copper on their necks....

When did the red start showing up?
Pretty birds

Probably about 4 weeks ago. sometimes they are still pretty pale.

they're blue marans
the one that was pure blue in color was murdered in a waterer incident right after they were born, these are the ones I've had.
I really thought they were cockerals so I have another 10 in the incubator set to hatch next week.
Guess we will see....

I'm REALLY hoping I get a hen out of the blue isbars, they are super pretty

Thank you 2StrayRoos. He is a pretty good looking rooster for a lakenvelder. His ear lobes are solid white, and his saddle should get a little blacker after his first molt (which he is going through now). Are you hatching campines now? If you liked the lakenvelders you should like the campines, as they are very similar in behavior from what I have read on campines.
Your sumatra makes me want sumatras. What is the temperment like?

Came in from a landscaping job today and worked the bees and chickens. I think I am going to see or trade off some of my flock and go with 3 or 4 sets only.

Probably going to let go of my Blue Old English bantam pair, a black rose comb bantam trio, a millie fleure d'uccle (sp) rooster, and maybe a wyandotte grey splash rooster

Proven breeders on the bantams. Wondering if there might be a market?

Oh...sitzhauben, silver penciled bantam Cochin chicks are growing like weeds!

I used pics of raptors, it was easier to find. Chickens cant take quite as bad a bite out of you as an owl or a kestrel or even a loon (loons are way meaner than raptors). I will take better pictueres eventually. I get great prices on feeding tubes on ebay, I can give you the seller I use if you like.

Will you be at the Pitt county fair? I will probably be bringing some friends and 4-Hers who might be interested.

I have a pair of Paul Smith Lavender and a Pair of Paul Smith BBS ameraucanas that I'm going to be re-homing. Any interest there?

. I'm hatching silkies and Silkie/Cochin now. I saw the Campines in Meyer Hatchery catalog. I like the golden ones and they are kinda small and friendly but noisy so they say. Also thinking about Sultans and of course another EE.
