North Carolina

Last 2x I hatched for lock down I did my best to keep it between 60-70 ideally, 65 but I have a homemade bator & the humidity is hard to keep stable for lockdown. Worked like a dream all those other days
Curious-- what do you guys put your humidity to when your eggs go on lockdown.
Mine has been around 50 (without any water) the past week I think from the weather.
Should I try to bump it up or leave it where it is?
Thanks!

I should mention that these 2x were the first times I've hatched (July & August). I'm a noob all around. Still have lots to learn

For the people out there that don't raise your own meat yet, or the ones that buy their kids manufactured chicken nuggets for convenience, I wanted to pass this article along. Just saw it in Businessweek, pretty scary stuff!

I so want to try and go to this!! My mom has been looking for Jersey Giants; think we would have any chance of finding any here?

I saw Blue Jersey Giants hatching eggs on ebay which I didn't even know was a thing!
The pictures of them were so pretty!
My goal of only keeping 6 pet chickens for laying isn't working out so great for me, there's so much I want!!!

Regular like raw chicken from the grocery store won't be from China, it's just some of the frozen nuggets (not that the regular chicken is good for you anyway after being fed only GMO corn and being washed in ammonia before packaged). But at least that is still from the US. It's SCARY that they can make manufactured chicken nuggets over there now without really being monitored and the packaging will NOT say made in China!!! The article also talks about how many dogs got sick from eating turkey treats made over there because of the non-regulated processing.

Gen6 - we have 6 White Leghorns and love EVERY SECOND of their peraonalities. They are so precious! They are young yet (April '13 babies) but we enjoy them. I never thought they would have so much personality but they follow us around the yard like puppies.

There is someone on here that is hatching White Leghorns... hopefully he will turn up soon. I apologize I don't know his name. I think moomoodiddy was talking witb him recently...

Anyone??

Hope you find some :)

Thanks! I'll try looking for a similar name (have searched white leghorns in this thread but didn't go too far back)
Yes she was like a dog, walked next to me outside, followed the dogs into the house like any family member, & would peck around under the dinner table. Her buddy is lonely, they were always together. I wonder if she would notice if I got a hen that looked just like her... She probably would. Wishful thinking I guess. :p

Gen9, yes she will notice, and unless she is your only remaining hen, I wouldn't add just ONE new hen. Add 2 or more so that your remaining birds don't peck or kill the new bird. As said above, there is a young man that is starting up a hatchery out towards the mountains. He was going on about having just hatched some white leghorn chicks. So I don't know if that will do or if you are still wanting from a breeder of leghorns.

Well I certainly wouldn't mind adding more leghorns to the flock! :D
I've integrated a few pairs to the flock before, I really don't like adding the minimum number, I prefer adding 5 or more, things go a little more smoothly that way. I've read somewhere that chickens can recognize up to 100 different faces. So she would definitely notice since I only have 33. When I have more time I'm going to look for the guy you've mentioned, I have some questions. I can't really take any more in until spring as I don't have the space, so there's no rush in getting some, I just want to find a good breeder, or someone that has leghorns with strong blood lines. Thanks for your advice!

That's really interesting about them recognizing so many faces!!!
I wonder how they determined that...

I hear a lot of non-chicken owners saying how dumb chickens are, they're really not! And I've also heard turkeys are really stupid and mine are smarter than my chickens haha.
