North Carolina

Anyone ever looking for realty should do an online search for the specific county's GIS system. Almost all are online. Once you figure out the system you can get all the info on a specific property.

Was also at the fair this weekend......boy if anyone is going and thinking of bring home a chicken...DO NOT DO IT!!!!! I can beleive the shape some of them were in! I aint talking about the molting feathers either! Some looked like they just came outta a pit fight while others looked like they would be dead by the end of the day or week!

Hope all have a great day....I'm off to see if I can make a complaint

any tips on cooking him?

You can cook him as if he were skinless chicken. So, you need moisture or fat so he doesn't dry out. My favorite rabbit is wrapped in bacon and grilled. Yummy!

Best of luck on the house-hunting. Any particular reason you must stay in town? Lots of places outside the city limits, with more space, less people noise, and more chickens!

CSB, hope you aren't feeling that this morning!

RF, I'm also feeling like lodging a written complaint this morning, after the visibly sick animals and rough treatment I saw yesterday. Must be complaint week!

lol I hate to do it, but (I didn't go last year to the fair) the two years before 90% looked like they had bugs so bad that they kept shaking their heads. I had hoped that it had improved some. BOY was I WRONG! If I had planned on showing there I would have walked in, seen that mess and walked out and demanded my entry fee back ( not no mail refund either) and not have showed. I feel so bad for the few birds that didn't look sick, I mean what are those owners to do? Sell the birds and risk the buyer being mad because the bird got sick from the snotty bird beside it? Risk taking it home to infect your flock with bubbly eyes? Others were so pale and weak looking I doubt they will make it. I was floored by the looks of some of these birds. Some were so bad that you didn't have to know chickens to know it wasn't healthy.

Boy, here I was feeling bad I couldn't take my kids to the fair. Now I'm glad I couldn't go.

Since all of you are such Debbie downers I thought I'd brighten things up a bit with a big announcement: MY HUSBAND GOT A NEW JOB!!!!!!!!!!!

This means that we'll be making enough money to finally be back above the poverty line - and can afford more chickens! And goats... Heck, we'll finally be able to buy groceries and pay the electric bill all in the same month! So excited to see this phase of life coming to an end! It's been over a year now of living and supporting a family of four on $1000/mo net income. Most importantly, we can finally pay to get our well water treated so that it's drinkable. Being smack in the middle of chicken farms means that the aquifer is apparently full of dangerously high nitrate levels - which is bad for all, but potentially life threatening to small children if they drink it. Been giving the family and all the pets bottled water - which aint cheap.

I can't even tell you how relieved and excited we all are here today. I hope that all of you are blessed with a happy and joyful day as well.

That is totally awesome news! Congrats to your hubby, and hugs all 'round to the entire family!

ChelsieMullett, I agree with everyone else's comments. When we bought our house, the covenants were discussed in advance. There was a copy of them on the kitchen counter for review. That is for the property/neighborhood. Town regulations are easy enough, just call the office for the town you are looking at. Of course, if you are outside of the town/city limits it would then be the county that you would call. Matt has a good recommendation about checking the GIS for the county. We decided against many places because of what they were surrounded by. GIS gives a really great birds eye view of the area, it doesn't show everything though.

Hollow, were there sick birds at WCA? So sorry to hear that!

Also sorry to hear the birds at the Fair are sick. I feel badly for the birds as well as any that weren't sick and are being shown. With the resources available in NC, I am really surprised they don't have someone come to check birds when they are pesented for showing.

Sadly, the fair and WCA might be an indicator of birds that are available for sale in the area right now. I know this is one of my soapboxes, but quarentine, quarentine, quarentine! It doesn't matter the age of the bird. I now wear only a special pair of shoes to the feed store becase I don't know what might be on the bottom of my shoes when I come home. I never go to the coops without changing my shoes first.

Meredith, I want to say sorry that it was so hard for you to "harvest" your rabbit. But I guess it should be somewhat hard. I haven't had it in me to take any of the chickens lives. We have had a few that needed to be killed because they were ill (why I started over this past spring) and an injured chick that would not have made it. My husband will take care of them but I know I need to do it one day. We have roosters set aside for freezer camp and I am going to make myself harvest at least one of them. I am sure I will cry while doing it too. It is the circle of life. If we are going to eat meat, I think we need to be able to kill it. Meat dosen't grow from those styrofoam packages in the market.
