North Carolina

Hi,
I'm new to BYC and new to chickens. I live in Chatham County, just outside of Pittsboro.
I've got a good number of chicks in my brooder now and am looking for 2 cockerels to add to the bunch.

It's cool to see so many other locals here. Nice to "meet" you all. :)

That sounds awesome I might have to bite your style on that one ;)
My watering system is similar.  I use a 55 gal drum for each chicken house.  It's on blocks to raise it up.  Since each chicken house is divided, it's got a splitter on it, and each runs to an automatic dog bowl.  That is also slightly raised to minimize debris getting kicked in.  We fill the drums weekly if they are indoors and check them weekly if they are outdoors.  They just have hardware cloth tops so the outdoor ones can get rain, too.  In winter when the mechanism on the water bowls will freeze up, I just use open bowls and fill them morning and evening.  It all works pretty well.  Much less effort and waste with the auto bowls.  I don't care for the nipple system, but this is perfect for us.

I should know better than to say anything about "I haven't seen..."! The other day, when I mentioned that I use DE in the coop and nesting boxes, and have yet to see and bugs on my chickens, I should have knocked on wood!!

Cleaned out the coops today, and of course, now that I'm done with that, I pick up a chicken to look at her foot (nothing wrong with it, thankfully), only to see tiny white bugs crawling on her near her eyes and ears. Are they mites or lice? Should I do another dose of DE even though the month isn't up since the last time I treated the coop? Should I get something else? Treat the dust bathing area? I've never had this problem before and have no idea what to do.

On another note, hope you all are having a fantabulous day!

What kind of roosters are you looking for and how old?

I would like the roosters to be of a good dual purpose breed. I'd like the roosters to be two different breeds however.

As for age, they either need to be between 1 and 3 weeks of age so that I can brood them with the current group I have going or they need to be old enough that I can put them outside in the coop area (but kept separate from the adult chickens for a little bit). Or I can wait and get an older chicken when I'm putting the young ones that are currently in the brooder into the coop area.

Honestly, I would like some young cockerels that I could watch grow. But I'll go with any of those situations.

DE is only a deterrent and not always successful. Once you have an infestation you need something better. I use 5% sevin dust.

Hi everyone! I might be getting about 2 dozen Bobwhite Quail eggs Friday and have never raised any before! Anyone ever hatched them/raised them before?
